DD only wants to drink from a regular cup!

But it's impossible to really teach her how to do it without spilling it all over herself at 17 months old right?! She flat out refuses all sippy cups (we've tried them all) lately and I have no clue why. Could it just be a phase?

I thought for sure the take & toss cups would bit a hit since they look like a regular cup with a straw but she wouldn't even try drinking from it. Just wanted to take the straw out and then when I took the top off she would drink from the actual cup.

This is for water only. She still gets milk in bottles, which is an entirely different post! Chat Icon

Try the Playtex Coolsters. They have no spout or straw, feels like a regular cup when they drink.

I don't know how possible it is to get her to drink w/o spilling, but my ped would acutaly rather we give DS a regular cup instead of sippy cups (she calls them glorified bottles.Chat Icon )

Maybe you can try to let her practice - I would think she would do well since it sounds like she knows what she's doing with it - just has to get the control down.

DS likes to drink from a cup if I let him, but, like you, I hate the mess so I only let him do it with REALLY tiny amounts of liquid right now. He does like his straw sippy though so he mostly gets that but sometimes I think I'd like to drop it all together.

Good luck.

When I worked in a daycare they drank from real dixie cup sizes from 18 months, right after the infant room. I was really surprised but they learned fast. Not many messes so it is possible I guess. Try a little liquid in at a time, maybe?

honestly, being a mom of a "non-drinker".....don't worry too much - she will drink when she is thirsty. I think some kids just don't like drinking. I know my mom said my sister was like this when she was little. And DD is sooooo like this! Hardly ever will she pick up her cup to take a drink, I am always trying to get her to drink! Lucky if she drinks 12-16oz of liquids a day...milk included!!!

I think its wonderful she's trying.

With AJ we used only water and prepared for the mess. The mess phase passed faster than it felt (if that makes sense) and she loves drinking out of 'real' cups.

They've been using 'real' cups (little plastic cups) since she was about 15m.

Good luck and keep the towels handy

I was going to suggest the same thing. My DD loves these.

Thanks! The little dixie cups are a great idea!! Hopefully she gets the hang of it on her own soon. It's just weird b/c she used to drink an entire sippy full of water, sometimes 2 a day. Then a few weeks ago just decided to stop...

...just got this Oxo training cup from BBB. You can still get soaked drinking from it, but it does have a little cover on it.

DS drank from a poland spring bottle when he was 15 mths. It was a mess but he did it at daycare in the summer. It helped him learn control. I think its possible. DS was drinking from a cup (his water and juice only) by 18 mths. We just gave him small quantities and kept refilling when he first started.
