Dear neighbor who did not even know my name this morning:
I thank you for introducing yourself as you lied about how much of my tree you were "trimming" today. "Trimming" doesn't require the use of men swinging on ropes as the ENTIRE trunk of the tree falls. Thank you for your consideration so I may see better into your yard as you lounge poolside. Enjoy lounging as we begin baseball practice with Logan this week.
Love & kisses, Nameless neighbor who will now be growing bamboo along her back fence

Re: Dear neighbor who did not even know my name this morning:
I totally understand your frustration. All that, probably because they got annoyed at having leaves in their pool.
But I beg you, please don't grow bamboo! You will regret it and so will your neighbors around you and the next owners of your house because you will never, ever be rid of it once it's there.
Please read the experiences of others on planting bamboo
It is a really bad problem around here. It's not a native plant and was never meant to grow (and invade) our environment.
Arborvitae and Leyland Cypress are good substitutes, and there are a ton of other prettier shrubs that grow 6 feet and taller - lilac, miscanthus, forsythia, weigela. If you get a lot of dirt, you can even do a berm to give yourself more height while you're waiting for it to fill in.

AGREE! DO NOT PLANT BAMBOO!!!!!!!!! My mom has it out of control and can't get rid of it!
And I get the feeling about having the leaves in the pool. I cut all my neighbors trees last year too...but only the part that hung into my yard. This year I didn't do it and I have a pool full of leaves.

We are having the same problem with bamboo. They are really invasive and hard to get rid of or even control.

Do you plan on having words with him? I would...if it was your tree and he pretty much cut it down, I would have words with him. Make him pay for leyland cypress to go up...since he took your tree down.

Re: Dear neighbor who did not even know my name this morning:
Good point. If the main trunk is gone, the rest of the tree is a goner, and you will have to pay to have it removed and the stump ground down. There are town laws about this, which I would research before having a discussion with them about how they're going to remedy the situation.

The main trunk is in our yard. He cut every branch off the other 2 smaller trunks that overhang his yard leaving me with a LARGE trunk in my yard full of branches.
When this tree inevitably becomes a problem it will topple into my yard

When this tree inevitably becomes a problem it will topple into my yard . No offense but it sounds like he had every right to trim what was overhanging his property. Its really not his problem that its now heavier on your side. Its your tree...

it totally stinks that you lost your privacy.....but I agree with the above poster. Arborvites might not be a bad idea....and a lot more manageable than bamboo!

Unfortunately for you, your neighbor is allowed to cut branches that climb over onto their property. It would have been considerate if they said they were going to do it in case you wanted to trim some branches on your side.
Whatever you do, don't plant bamboo!!

Re: Dear neighbor who did not even know my name this morning:
UGHHHHH I hate hate hate bamboo!!!
We have it along side of our garage. It is actually not from OUR previous owners. It is from the previous owner of the house next door. They planted it BEFORE our previous owner installed their PVC fence (that is what I am assuming bc of where it is).
Anyway.....it growns along side of our garage in between this space of the garge and the PVC and it is really a PAIN! Every year we cut it back and every year it starts up again!
I can't stand it!! they grow taller than my garage!!!
Regarding the leaves/ tress...we cut our neighbor's leaves every 2 summers but only the branches that hang into our yard. The first summer his tree was out of control and the branches were touching the roof of our house and we were told for safety reasons we shouls remove them. Of course we asked the neighbor and he told us no problem and that he we could do it as much as we want. We are still considerate however.

Re: Dear neighbor who did not even know my name this morning:
1/ NOOOOO bamboo
2/ I cut my neighbors trees that was creating a complete 10 ft shade canopy over my veggie garden. I asked her 1st as a courtery. We cut every thing back to the level of my fence. I need sun for my veggie garden and there was no reason for me to have to try to relocate my veggie garden when that's the only spot that has the most sun all day for me to grow my veggies. She was OK with it. We asked her as a courtesy but I needed the branches out regardless.

I am most angry that he LIED. He said he was trimming it. Trimming would be the branches hanging over his yard. They took EVERY branch off off 2 out of the 3 trunks.
I understand he had a right...but he LIED and said "trimming"!!!
You talked me out of bamboo...but we are going to do something!

I honestly don't know what word he should have used. I don't see the big deal if it's on his yard--we're cutting down an entire neighbor's tree (we did ask first) because of the leaves and poison ivy on it (DH gets hospitalized when exposed).
But planting something new is a good option!

Sorry about your neighbor!
Try Leyland Cypress, it grows pretty quick, blocks the neighbor nicely and it's not invasive. Bamboo is something you can't get rid of, it's like ivy.

That stinks that he lied to you. In all fairness, we just trimmed all of the trees on our property - all 26 of them
I am so SICK and TIRED of cleaning up after these trees and I didn't feel the need to give any of my neighbors a courtesy warning. They're not exactly going to come clean my property, KWIM??? Your neighbor sounds like he was trying to be nice

Re: Dear neighbor who did not even know my name this morning:
Im glad they talked you out of bamboo. If you look on craiglist, there is a place in center moriches? that sells those nice evergreens at a really good price. They will even deliver and plant for more of course. You can get a "damaged" tree for less and face that side towards your neighbor
Heres a link http://longisland.craigslist.org/grd/2519101440.html

I have to agree with them.
We told our neighbor's what we were doing first since there would be tree climbers doing the cutting.

If they hung into his property, he had every right to cut them. I'm sorry you're not happy but maybe he wasn't happy about the sunshine being blocked in his yard and the cleanup of your tree's droppings from in his pool or yard.
I can sympathize with him and will be cutting back my neighbor's trees in the spring in the same manner.

Sorry to be a bearer of bad news, but if your tree over hangs into his property, they ARE allowed to trim anything on their side without permission from you. We went through this. He/she is allowed to start at the property line and go all the way up.
