Dear Senator Obama...

I was a huge supporter of yours until I noticed that you (as well as Senator McCain) voted in favor of this bailout. How can you claim to be an agent of change and allow this bill to be passed with hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks? Did you think the American people wouldn't notice?

And please don't tell me that this was the lesser of two evils. If you really wanted "change" you would have showed some leadership and spoke on the floor about how you will protect the American people from having to spend millions of dollars on Auto Racing Tracks, Imported Rum and Arrows for Boy Scouts in Oregon.

You are not an agent of change. You are just like everyone else.

I will be voting for Nader...like I did in 2000.

yep... they're all the same products of our crappy political system! I nearly PUKED when i heard almost $100 million of ADDITIONAL money in earmarks were added to this bill. these Senators wouldn't vote for the bill until they get what they wanted. absolutely disgusting! and we wonder why nothing gets done in Washington? It's because they're all too busy scratching each other's backs!

i wish there was a puke icon on LIF.

This "bailout" is nothing but a bandaid...the problem is still going to exist. They are hoping by pumping more $$$ into the economy it is going to work but it most likely will not. Our economy will still get back to this point eventually and we will have to pay the price regardless. There are other options but they want a quick fix. Supposably our economy was going to collapse without this $700 billion dollars yet our economy is still functioning 3 weeks later.

The truth is we are no where near a depression. For the economy to go into a depression you need a 20% unemployment rate. Our unemployment rate is held steady at 6-7%.

Aslo regarding the housing bailout...only 7% of sub-prime loans are in default...they make it seem like it is a far greater number.

People are panicking b/c of the news media. Unfortunately, many people dont question the media and what it reports and really look into the facts. As educated of a country we are supposed to be, many are not educated on the important topics.

Here is an article which itemizes what the $700 BIL is going towards:

On Wednesday evening, October 1, 2008, the Senate debated and voted on a revised version of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA 2008). The legislation was framed as an amendment to HR1424, substituting the entire bill with the newly revised text of the EESA 2008.[5][6][129] The amendment was approved by a 74-25 vote, and the entire bill was also passed by the same margin, 74-25.[130][131] Only cancer-stricken Senator Ted Kennedy did not vote. Under the legislative rule for the bill, sixty votes were required to approve the amendment and the bill.[6][128][129]

The revised plan left the $700 billion bailout intact and appended a stalled tax bill.[128] The bill has three major divisions, Division A: the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008; Division B: Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008, and Division C: the Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008.[4] The tax bill has provisions that will have a net expenditure of $100 billion over 10 years. It had been stalled due to a disagreement between Democrats that did not want to increase spending without a corresponding increase in taxes and Republicans, who were adamantly opposed to any tax increases. The provisions of the tax bill included: [132][128][6]

An increase in FDIC deposit insurance limit from $100,000 to $250,000
Tax breaks for businesses
Tax credits for the use of alternative energy
Tax credits for R&D
Expansion of the child tax credit
Protection from the alternative minimum tax
Tax reductions for victims of severe weather (e.g. tornados, floods, hurricanes)
Extension of unemployment insurance
A USD $1,000 tax credit for low income homeowners
Tax breaks and credit extensions for the following:
"Certain wooden arrows designed for use by children" (Sec 503)
Wool Research (Sec. 325)
Film and Television Productions (Sec. 502)
Litigants in the 1989 Exxon-Valdez oil spill (Sec. 504)
Virgin Island and Puerto Rican Rum (Section 308)
American Samoa (Sec. 309)
Mine Rescue Teams (Sec. 310)
Mine Safety Equipment (Sec. 311)
Domestic Production Activities in Puerto Rico (Sec. 312)
Indian Tribes (Sec. 314, 315)
Railroads (Sec. 316)
Auto Racing Tracks (317)
District of Columbia (Sec. 322)
A House leader accused the Senate of legislating “by blunt force” without public-consent.[133] Senate has also been accused of “sweetening” the bailout to force its passage by the opposing House.[11][134]

The United States annual budget deficit for Fiscal 2009 may surpass $1 trillion. The original Paulson proposal would lift the United States federal debt ceiling by US$ 700 billion, to $11.3 trillion from the current $10.6 trillion.[135]

ETA: I would say our economy is in a recession. The main reason we are here is b/c people overused credit b/c the banks handed out credit like it was candy.

What really sucks is that our vote here in NY really doesn't matter. With today's technology the national vote should be calculated by voter popularity not delegates that are based on old news & antiquated ideas.

I disagree with this. the electoral college was put in place to ensure that less populated states like SD would have fair say like more populated ones do.

exactly. I think it blows that this great land of ours only has a few states that can truly be swayed one way or the other.
