Death of a friend's parent

My 7 YO son's friend's dad died today suddenly. He was also my son's soccer coach.

I'm not sure how I should tell my son yet - I plan on it since I'm sure he will hear it at school.

But, should I bring him with me to the wake? I'm not sure how this works.

Re: Death of a friend's parent

We have had the death of a classmates parent. It really shook my daughter. For kids that age it is scary to think that could be their parents. I imagine it will be especially hard for your son as he had a relationship with the Dad.

If you bring to wake will be a personal decision. I would in your situation. Chat Icon

Thank you.

We haven't told him yet - DH and I discussed last night and he didn't want to. Kind of upset about that because I'm sure he will hear in school (he's not in his class or his grade but, the girl who sits next to him lives across the street from the family).

While I have never been in this situation and my kids are a little younger, this isn't something you can really shield him from because your families are so intertwined, so I probably would take him so he can be there for his friend.

This is just so unimaginably sad, my heart breaks for that family. I'm so sorry any of you have to be worrying about how to deal with this right now. Chat Icon

I would probably explain to him what a wake is (if he doesn't know) and ask him if he wants to go. And honor his wishes.

I know it's different, but my aunt died suddently when I was 8 and my family really shielded it from me (we were very close). I did not go to the wake or funeral (I was not asked). I wish I went because it would have helped me with closure. It was very surreal to me that I wasn't going to see her anymore.

Thanks - we ended up not taking him. They just did one long session and it was crazy mobbed. His children didn't even attend since it was too much for them.
