Decorating - blank slate

Where do you begin if you are completely redecorating a living room - re-doing everything from furniture, floors, wall color, window treatments? I see paint colors I like, I see sofas that I like, I see area rugs that I like - but they don't all necessarily go together - it's just individual things that I like. So what do you start with to then build from? What is the first thing you pick out and then go from there?

I chose a paint color and then worked everything else around that. I had paint colors chosen before I even closed on the house. Then I purchased flooring and furniture to go along with that. And since my house is a semi open concept, I had several rooms adjacent to each other and I used complimenting tones/colors.

I would pick your color scheme first and go from there. Paint, flooring/area rug, couches, curtains, etc.

I would pick the floor first because that would be the most expensive and hardest to change. We kept the floor and designed around it. I do think it’s important to at least have a basic color in mind: tans, greys, reds, blues, etc.

I just did this. I browsed Pinterest for inspiration. Started with color theme and picked a few main pieces I loved and filled in the little stuff as I went. Still a work in progress but I love how it's turning out

We are currently doing this. We picked floor first, next will be the couch and then paint. We have an open floor plan, so we decided to stick with light and neutral colors.

Also, browse on Houzz. I get great ideas from there.

Def find something that gives you inspiration - look on pinterest, houzz etc. Decide what color palette you like and build from there. And whats your style? Do you like farmhouse, modern, traditional or a mix?

For example, I just redid my bedroom. I found a duvet i loved on PB. From there, I took the duvet to the paint store and chose a paint color that was part of the pattern in the duvet. Chose a neutral area rug since the pattern is a little busy. I then chose gold accents, so I got antique gold sconce lamps, gold framed photos for over the bed, gold hardware, etc.

You definitely have to try and picture it in your head first. I find some of my friends (who often look to me for decorating advice) will just choose a bunch of random things they like...but sure you can like a bunch of different things, but if they dont pair well together, you will never get the look and feel you were going for.
