Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS

I am pretty sure that I am going to go for a VBAC, and my ob won't allow that at St. Catherines. I am meeting with the midwives this week to discuss options.

The only thing I am nervous about is the horror stories I have heard about students at SB since it's a teaching hospital. If I have to have a c/s, I am freaking out at the thought of all the "mistakes" that can happen with a student.

Does anyone have more info on this?

Has anyone had a delivery of any type with students there?

I delivered at Winthrop which is a teaching hospital. My doctor had an intern assist her with my c-section. The intern sewed me up, with supervision. I had no complications.

I thought students could only watch ? I delivered 2 of my dd's there ,and with dd#1 I had many students in the room so with #3 I made sure I told the midwives ,I wanted no students in the room , so maybe you can make a similar request if a c-sec is needed?

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS

There were students in the OR when I had my c-section. No horror stories here.

To be honest at that point I was so out of it they could have had gorillas perform the c-section & I wouldn't have cared.

At any teaching hospital I worked at as long as the patient has a private attending you can REFUSE any residents, unless of course you were an emergency csection & there was no other attending on the unit..

I delivered at Stony Brook and had a c-section with no issues. They asked me if students could be allowed in the room. So you do have a choice.

Right this is what I thought. If you used a Dr from the "outside" that had rights at the hospital, you could refuse it.

I delivered at NSUH and refused to allow any residents/interns to observe. My doctor said that if I needed a C then I wouldn't have the option to decline b/c he would need an0other doc (a resident not an intern to assist but that he would do the stitching. There is a difference between a resident and an intern.

I'm upstate but I had a C-section at a teaching hospital and had no problems. They usually are prepped for all kinds of things at teaching hospitals, which make them if anything, better. Good luck!

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS

I delivered vaginally at SB, and had a great experience, but mostly it was interns checking in on me. There was one male intern I couldn't STAND--I had pushed for 6 hours and he told me that I should just take a break and keep pushing, when I knew we needed to take other measures. I screamed for the attending, she came immediately, and she wound up using a vacuum to suck out DS.

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS

I had both a C-section and a major surgery at Stony Brook. Both times I was offered the opportunity to say "no" to having residents & interns present and/or helping. I did not mind at all and it turned out that both times, those residents came to see me after surgery and helped me out with a few things. I have read of some awful experiences that LIFers have had and my heart goes out to them but my experience with students was good. In fact, after my major surgery, I had a woman who was training to be a home health aide show up every morning to help me wash and dress. Her school had arranged for her stint at the hospital. She was great.

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS

wow I am surprised reading the responses as I delivered at SB and really never saw ANY interns, my doctor asked me if a resdient could be in the room and that was it. I did have a high risk pregnancy and very serious complications during my C section and was put under during so if they were there I don't know and my husband did not either. I never saw anyone after that and I was in the hospital for several days after my c section.

I will add I had an AMAZING experience at SB and under very stressful circumstances my doctor and everyone at SB helped ensure my son and I were both ok.

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS

I was never given the option of NOT having a resident touch me. Jenna, I will send you the info on Dr. Death, so you know who to avoid!

some food for thought since i work in a teaching hospital have you ever thought about your contribution to educations some of the best doctors are those with the most hands on experience. So 20 years from now don't you want your daughters to have well trained docs?
I also delivered at a teaching hospital (winthrop) had a resident in my c/section and check on me postpartum. They were fine.
I also think that it's awesome if it's your midwide teaching the doctors so they are more well rounded.

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS

I had one when I delivered my boys vaginally at StonyBrook, and she was AWESOME!!!!! She was right beside my dr., then was asked if I could have students come in and watch. I was like heck ya, what was a bunch more of people. There were so many staff members in there.

I delivered both boys at SB with the midwives -- they had stdent nurses and a couple of interns came in to 'observe' but I was ALWAYS asked before they came in the room. So for me, I was given the choice and my decisions were respected.

Feel the need to say that I asked DH to have one of the student nurses leave the room while I was in labor -- she was really loud, kept turning the Doppler volume up really high so she could hear it from the hallway plus she said I must not really be in labor because I was still talking through the contractions. I didn't feel bad at all when my midwife removed her from the room. Chat Icon

I delivered at Stonybrook and loved having the interns there. They were great and so helpful with everything. They are the reason I didn't tear with either delivery.

I had 2 residents in the room. I delivered vaginally at NSUH. They really didn't do much...except tell me to stop pushing when I couldn't for my md to get there, lol and one of them did my stitches from when I tore, but my doc was literally right next to her pointing at where to put them-I only had 6 stitches and no problems.

I also delivered at Winthrop and with my second the intern delivered me and my Dr. was right next to him.
He was adorable and I think a few of us 2007 mommies had him Chat Icon
