I was never given the option of NOT having a resident touch me. Jenna, I will send you the info on Dr. Death, so you know who to avoid!
what happened?

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS
I delivered at a teaching hospital. I wound up with a c-section after a failed induction. One of the residents did my c-section with guidance, of course, from my OB/GYN. I had absolutely no issues with my incision. When the nurses checked on me in the hospital, they commented on how well it was healing.
I can definitely understand why you'd be concerned though. I'd probably want any future c-sections to be performed by my doctor b/c of scar tissue, etc.

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS
I had an intern at SIUH who worked with my doctor and it was fine.
But I think that since you know the name of the one particular intern that Kristin had trouble with, you know who to look for.

I had my thyroid removed at Stonybrook and there were interns around. I didn't mind and in fact, they are so "eager" to learn, I felt it was more hands on. You know.

some food for thought since i work in a teaching hospital have you ever thought about your contribution to educations some of the best doctors are those with the most hands on experience. So 20 years from now don't you want your daughters to have well trained docs? I also delivered at a teaching hospital (winthrop) had a resident in my c/section and check on me postpartum. They were fine. I also think that it's awesome if it's your midwide teaching the doctors so they are more well rounded.
ITA with this. If your Dr. is comfortable having students and interns around, then trust your Dr.! It's not like one of the students will be actually performing a c-section or an episiotomy--and as long as you make that clear to everyone involved, I personally don't see the big deal.
How do you think YOUR doctors learned?

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS
i just delivered at stonybrook in february and there were no interns at my delivery. Just me, DH, the dr and a nurse. I had a great experience at stony brook, loved it there. They did have a resident dr come into my postpartum room just to check on me but that was it.

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook and INTERNS
Remember there is a difference between med students, interns and residents.
Med students are just that--still in school. They do rotations in hospitals in different areas. The do things like take patient histories and maybe the most minor procedures only with supervision.
Interns are in their first year of residency and are very closely supervised by senior residents and attendings. Interns will only do the most basic stuff, especially at the start of their intern year (which is usually July). They are technically doctors.
Residents are still in training but have more experience depending on what year they are in and can do a variety of things under the supervision of their attending. If you go to a teaching hospital, you will probably get checked on by a resident in addition to your own private doctor who may or may not be there the whole time.
Attendings are doctors who have completed their training and may be in private practice or work directly through the hospital.
Hope that helps...there is definitely a difference in skill and experience level between these different doctors.
