Delivering at Stonybrook, where do visitors wait?
I'm delivering at Stonybrook hospital and my mom seems to think that she'll be waiting right outside of the delivery room and will get to see the baby wheeled by post-delivery.
When my SIL gave birth in 2009 we all had to wait down in the lobby by the piano. Is that still protocol or is there a new waiting area?
Does anyone know? TIA!

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook, where do visitors wait?
I delivered in January. I don't remember where my family waited but there was about 20 of them and they were there the entire time I was in L&D, so about 13 hours. I do know they brought the baby past my family so they could see him when they were taking him to the nursery.
Eta: they don't let anyone stand outside the doors. My MIL and SIL tried to sneak in and they got yelled at LOL!

Never delivered there, but I will be in March. I went for a tour and they just opened the new labor and delivery a few months ago. They have chairs right in front of the doors for the family members to wait. The labor and delivery is on the main level. It is to the right of the information desk and starbucks.

NOT AT ALL! I was worried about the same thing.
( I am going to write a long post now... warning! LOL )
Do yourselves a favor and book the hospital tour, we did and it was just GREAT to see how it all works.
When you come (as a visitor) to the hospital you walk in on the 5th floor - which is the same floor you will be delivering on. But the trick is the maternity area is on the RIGHT past the Starbucks. There is plenty of seating there and bathrooms near that waiting area for your guest. There is a security guard right in that area and won't let anyone in there OR up to the 6th floor which is where the Maternity rooms / nursery is. Also when they going to the 6th floor there is one elevator up and down. That is it. They have to pass the security guard and be buzzed in when they arrive on the 6th floor!!
When you go in for admitting for delivery (5th floor on right side of building (floor you came in on) past the starbucks) you go into a small room with nurses for admitting, then down a hallway and another set of doorway they lead you through. It is NOT close to the waiting area AT ALL. After the baby is born we were told it takes about 2 hours for you and the baby to make it's way up to the 6th floor. Your visitors are not allowed to even SEE the baby after birth until it is on the 6th floor WITH YOU and you / DH give the ok. The nurse who did the tour said straight out that they are there to be the "Bad guy" while you are admitted with them.
My mom was annoyed she won't see the baby directly after the birth and has to wait a couple of hours. But when it comes down to it the baby is in the middle of the hospital in a surgical safe area where visitors are not allowed. There is no window for the nurse / DH to show the baby off to your family. But when it comes down to it I was happier knowing that I wouldn't have the added extra stress of family outside the door. (if you know what I mean... )
If you have any other questions let me know.

Wait I have a question. I just went on a tour last month. When I went I was told admitting for us was right when you walk into labor and delivery on 5th floor. I saw where it was. Then we where shown the rest of L&D and the nursery was right in there and had glass windows all around. We where all looking at the babies. I was told we wouldn't go anywhere else other there and then straight up to 6 floor for post pardum. I know where the other admitting is but was told not to go there. Now I'm confused!

Re: Delivering at Stonybrook, where do visitors wait?
Alli06- They told us about that area but we could not go in it- they told us that area of nursery on the 5th floor was the 'holding area' until the babies and mommies go to the 6th floor. They said that is where the babies get a bath while mom is recovering and getting checked over before moving to the 6th. But that Visitors are NOT allowed there at all. They can only see the babies when they arrive on the 6th. On the 6th they can see them thru the glass enclosed nursery windows or in the room with mom.

Honestly, if your mom wanted to see the baby after you deliver, she probably could as long as your dh was with her. My mom and sisters were taken to the nursery window by my dh (right after i gave birth and before visiting hours started) while I was waiting for a room. The one thing I hated was that there was a ridiculous number of births the day I had ds, so it took forever to get a room. I literally waited like 5 hours before I got to see the baby again/get settled in a room.

same here. for both my babies, my DH got my mom from the waiting area while I was in the recovery area and then escorted her to see the baby.....
