I lost part of my tooth the other day. Need to get it fixed!! I'm 13 weeks and just a bit nervous about getting drugs to numb the pain

Re: Dental work while pg?
I just had two fillings done yesterday. The only thing is that they use a weaker Novacain.... so it takes a bit longer to numb you..... But just make sure you tell your Dentist that you are PG

I had a temporarr filling put in 2 weeks ago b/c I cracked my tooth too! it fell out 4 days later and I am going the 19th for a CROWN! I brought a note from my dr. b/c you need to be double vested for xraysand they give you a lesser strength novacaine.

Re: Dental work while pg?
I am a dental assistant for over 5 years (and 23 weeks preg), You can certainly have dental work done while your pregnant. The numbing agent used in your gums is a local anesthetic, meaning it does not enter your bloodstream. The only precaution you will need to take is when it comes to x-rays. And you should only have a cleaning during the 2nd trimester because of the bacteria that may be ingested. So don't let that broken tooth go, get it fixed A.S.A.P -Good luck!

woops, thanks Gina. You are right- it DOES go into the bloodstream.
You can get a cleaning in the first trimester and should every 3 months from then on to prevent gum disease which can cause low birth weight.

Re: Dental work while pg?
This is what my OB told me.
No x-rays. Wait for dental work if you can. If not or an emergency, 2nd trimester is best for dental work.

Re: Dental work while pg?
I am an RDH (in practice for 8 years and before that an asst for 5 years)-- licensed to give injections and the numbing agent(novacaine) does enter your bloodstream and needs to oked by your OB. Most OB's prefer that you are injected with an "epinephrine free" novacaine such as mepivicaine or xylocaine. Before you see your dentist please get a medical clearance from your OB's office. If they do need to xray you please have them double lead apron you. Also it is safe (throughout an entire pregnancy) from conception to birth to get a dental cleaning. In fact it is now recommended(and some insurance companies are covering) a prophylaxis every 3 months(trimester) of pregnancy. If you have any questions please feel free to FM me.

Re: Dental work while pg?
I had plllllenty of dental work done while PG, including a root canal! These other posts are correct - you are a-okay to get numb also just as long as no epinephrine is used (makes your heart and the baby's heart race), and obviously you'd need to double cover if x-rays are absolutely necessary.
