Dermatologist?? Skin cancer screening?
I am looking for a good dermatologist possibly in the West Islip area. I go every 6 months to get screened..but I just don't feel like the places I've gone to are being thorough. They look at my body for 2 minutes and say I'm ok.
I am a red head with tons of freckles and moles and just want to be proactive about everything since I've had a few bad sunburns in my life and was stupid and used to go tanning when I was a teenager.
Does anybody know any derm. that is good and thorough and doesn't mind screening often? (the one i went to last couple times says ...you look good...you don't have to come every since months anymore..come back in 2 or 3 years.....(yeah...no thanks!!??)
Thanks in advance!

Re: Dermatologist?? Skin cancer screening?
I have the same 'problems' (light skin, lots of moles, many sunburns in the past) and I am seen every six months by Advanced Dermatology -- they have several different offices across LI and I've been to at least three of them (W Islip, Commack and Setauket).
They're VERY thorough with the checks and as proactive, which is what I want. I go every six months and sadly, I have 1-2 moles taken off every year.
Advanced Derm

Re: Dermatologist?? Skin cancer screening?
I just started seeing someone in Huntington off of a recommendation and am thoroughly impressed. I too have had bad dermatologists, and I have a strong family history, so I need someone who knows their stuff. FM me if you want her information.

I agree with all of the above... I have been going to the Queens location for years and started going to the Roslyn location since I moved out ti LI...they are always thorough (some more than others) when I find one I like I keep going back to those...but they always check between my toes, under feet etc..I also go every 6 months and have had things removed almost ever time

See and I went to their Queens location and I HATED it. And I used to also see Dr Loucas at the Great Neck or Manhasset location (forget which one) and I would wait forever and be rushed out in 5 minutes.

I was actually going to an Advanced Dermatology....they spent 2 mins and sent me away...not comfortable with that. I guess it depends on what doctor you get maybe...but honestly its not something I want to waste my time on again. Id rather find a place that shows me they care.

Re: Dermatologist?? Skin cancer screening?
a proper screen invilves taking ALL clothing off- and having the DR examine each mole / frekle with a special maginfying glass/light. even betwen your legs
it took me a few doctors to find one i am comfortable with who will do this. the one i go to is a woman who is extremely professional. its too bad she is in CT because i recommend her to eveyone.

See this is what i would expect...I've been to 3 dermatologist and NO ONE has done anything like that. I guess its just a matter of "shopping around" until I find one I like! Thanks!

Re: Dermatologist?? Skin cancer screening?
I love the ones who come in and take one look at my arms and legs (I have a lot of moles) and say sorry I don't look at those it is too hard to keep track of them - you have to do photos - and that will be $200 and insurance doesn't cover it - so are you doing them or not.... I have had 2 try that with me.
The good ones do really thorough check ups - with rulers to measure, etc - full body checks.
