Re: Devastated Beyond Belief
To the OP, my heart goes out to you. Your daughter will most certainly by in my thoughts and prayers.
Once this has sunk in, however, I do suggest that you start beginning therapy that will get her acclimated to her new life. I know a little girl who was diagnosed with something similar and is probably about 80% blind right now. The best thing her parents did for her was get her prepared. She is learning braille now while it is easiest, is learning to use her other senses to get around, etc.
Hopefully your daughter will be lucky. I hope she never loses her vision.

Re: Devastated Beyond Belief
I have no idea how to respond to this post because I don't have any children and I cannot imagine how difficult this must be. I know that I, too, tend to think of the worst possible scenarios and that my DH is similar to yours in that he thinks in the positive. But sometimes that doesn't help because you just want someone to understand what you're feeling and the anxieties you are going through. I have two cats and when one of them got sick shortly before I adopted her, I felt sick to my stomach. And that was my KITTEN. Having a child is obviously not even comparable so I can't even begin to understand how terrified you must feel. I'm sure you must just want to know the results ASAP and are praying for the best. I really do believe in the power of prayer and I will be praying for you. I hope that everyone else who reads your post does the same. Feel free to FM me if you need someone to talk to. I am so sorry you are going through this.

Re: Devastated Beyond Belief
First, and to you.
Second: i'm glad that you can come to LIF for support!! I know what it feels like to not want to tell anyone what is going on and to come on here and just get it out. So good for you, I hope you can find some good advice and support here, along with your great dh! And please continue to pursue professional help.
Third: I am not a parent and have no idea what it is you are going through, however, I have lived with anxiety and panic attacks for many years now. I heard this ad on radio from Lucinda Bassett about the cd's she has for anxiety and I got them as a trial to help me. They did. They are very expensive and I ended up returning them (they give a full refund within like 30 days of purchase) but not before I got something out of it by listening. This may be a supplement to your other strategies for support. I am also a 'glass half empty' person and always look at the gloom and doom, dh is the opposite.
Praying for you and your daughter

Re: Devastated Beyond Belief
I am very sorry that you're dealing with this right now.
I just wanted to respond because there is a strong presence of RP in my family.
My paternal grandmother has it as well as 3 out of 5 of her sons. Luckily my father is one of the 2 sons that did not get RP, but instead he has uvitis.
I just wanted to let you know that a lot of times, RP causes a VERY SLOW loss of sight.
It took my grandmother 80 years to become legally blind. My uncles are nowhere near blind and they are in their 40s and 50s.
I know how terrible it is to hear that your daughter may have RP, but please be encouraged by the fact that many times, RP is a very slow working disease.

Re: Devastated Beyond Belief
I don't even know what to say. I can't imagine the pain and anxiety you are going through. Get every kind of help your family needs (medical, psychological, etc) because there is life beyond this, and a happy one.
I knew someone in college with that condition. He was at a point where he could see ok during the day but was almost completely night blind at that point. He honestly seemed like a well-adjusted normal, brave person facing this. We used to tell him how jelous we were that he gets to wear night vision goggles. (That's college for you), but the point is he was really doing well despite the condition.
I don't mean to minimize it in ANY way, but you've got to have faith that this is not the end of the world. I am so so sorry you are going through this.
