DH is gonna think I'm nuts, but I have to ask (Formula related)

ok so if you've seen some of my recent posts you will know that I am having some issues with finding a formula that works for my DS. My DH thinks I'm nuts because I've switched twice already, but he isn't with DS all day! He started on Similac Advance then after a month on that had really painful gas and was so fussy. Then after his 2 month appt. we put him on Similac Sensitive RS due to reflux-worked great for a week then made him terribly constipated, now he is on Similac Sensitve "for fussiness and gas" and he seems to be more fussy.....uh it never ends!

My question to you EFF moms, what are you feeding your LO and did they start on that formula or was it a trial and error fiasko?

I was an enfamil mom ultimately

She started on similac cause i had tons of free RTF of it but also had enfamil. She was just 'better' on enfamil and the ped recommended it.

She was on Gentlease for gas and fussiness for 6mo then moved back to Lipil until year 1.

My son is 9 months old and has been on Similac Advance since when he was born at the hospital...but I did give him Mylicon drops for the first 2 weeks that seemed to help with his gas. My Ped did say that with any formula it does take about 2 weeks for babies to adjust and to really see a result.

We tried so many formulas & ended up using similac sensitive & I started putting a little camomille tea in his bottles to help with gas. It was trial & error for us. I think we went through 6 formulas.

We started on Enfamil and AJ was very gassy.

Then we went to similac sensitive and he was a nightmare!!!!

Then we switched to Gentlease and he was an entirely different baby. It was a miracle formula for us.

My sister had an issue with reflux and her son. Her ped told her it could take up to two full months for damage to heal completely, so she did not change formula unless her son showed ZERO improvement for a six week period.

When we first started EFF DD she was on Similac NeoSure since she was a preemie. After she 'caught up' in weight she was put on Similac Advance. She did okay with the Advance but did have some constipation issues. Our ped is not big on switching formulas too quick so he suggested that we give her prune juice/water whenever she got constipated (always worked fine) which we did. I took it upon myself one day to try the Sensitive and she did great on it. She's been on it ever since.

ETA: I do think it's a good idea to give the formula some time and let babies adjust first before making another switch but thats JMO.

Re: DH is gonna think I'm nuts, but I have to ask (Formula related)

You are not nuts- so many of us have switched formulas. Here is the history with my boys:

DS #1- first on Enfamil Lipil, then Good Start, then Similac Alimentum was the one that worked (He had reflux and was also on Prevacid). We gave each one about 5 days between switches. Though once on Alimentum- he was happier within a day!

DS #2- no reflux so much easier. Was on Enfamil Lipil, was gassy and fussy. Tried Gentlease, still gassy and fussy. Then switched to Similac Sensitive and that once seems to agree with him.

DS is 4.5 months old- when he is 6 months will try going to Similac Advance to see if he tolerates that since he will be a bit older.

Hope you find the right one!Chat Icon

DD had issues with gas when she was about a week old. She was up all night crying in pain and her tummy was rumbling :( The doctor recommended that we switch her to Similac Isomil (soy-based formula) and use mylicon. After about two days, DD was a different baby. No more gas pains. We have stayed with the Isomil ever since without any problems.

Aiden was a lot better once we switched from Similiac Advance to Enfamil Gentlease. Eventually we ended up using Enfamil Lipil once he was around 8 months

Ok, I'm so right there with you!
First we tried similac advance, then similac sensitive, then gentlease worked for 2 months and started to give him a problem, we tried good start for the last week or so and it's terrible, so now we're trying regular similac againChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: DH is gonna think I'm nuts, but I have to ask (Formula related)

Oy...DS started on Similac advanced at the hospital. by day 3 he was not so good. We tried sensitive and then soy...we switched to fast too frequently. Finally, Dr. gave us alimentum and there was a big difference within a few days. We were on allimentum until about 5mo old when we weaned him off and onto good start gentle plus.

Ds is 10 1/2 mo. old and still on Good start gentle plus with no problems.

It is definitely trial and error and may take a few tries to find something that works for your DC.

Re: DH is gonna think I'm nuts, but I have to ask (Formula related)

Oh, I am in the same boat as you! I started the twins on Enfamil Lipil, then DS had reflux and DD had gas, so we went with Enfamil AR for DS and Gentlease for DD. The AR was working great, so we went with that for both. THEN, DD's gas got really bad, so I thought she may have a milk intolerance and we switched to Nutrimigen, but she hates it and spits it up.
Needless to say, I have a Dr. appointment tomorrow to figure out what to do...and hopefully get some free samples Chat Icon

Similac Sensitive

She was horribly gassy so the doc switched her but first he gave her RS, which she didn't need and made her totally backed up.

I switched to the regular sensitive and she's been fine..although still gassy for awhile (she seems to have grown out of it)

I also tried Enfamil Gentlease but she didn't like it- she literally spit it out.

What seemed to help the most was using probiotics in her bottle once a day.

Re: DH is gonna think I'm nuts, but I have to ask (Formula related)

DD started on Similac Advance at the hospital, but was switched to Alimentum within 2 weeks because of a milk protein allergy (found blood specks in her stools). With Alimentum, I noticed a huge difference within a day and DD did beautifully on it until she developed reflux (she probably had it all along, but I guess it took awhile for her esophagus to get irritated and to show signs). Anyway, Zantac helped at first then it didn't, rice cereal helped some but not enough, Axid didn't help at all, and we couldn't really change formula - we were already on a broken down formula - I suppose we could've gone rx but that seemed extreme - so we switched her meds instead and that did the trick. She's now on Prevacid and Alimentum and has been for months - doing great. Might try Gentlease soon to see if she's grown out of the allergy at all. I might also try soy... I wouldn't do both but I've been feeling brave since she's doing so well and hasn't had any other allergy issues yet so we'll see what we decide. I know the ped wants to try some dairy at 9 months anyway. I don't know - I may change nothing since it's also hard to mess with a good thing! Alimentum is just so darn Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon, and not covered by our insurance so if she could do just as well on something else, that'd obviously be better.

Re: DH is gonna think I'm nuts, but I have to ask (Formula related)

honestly, most babies will do fine on routine formula's however around 4-12 weeks of age most babies are fussy and gassy due to immature digestive system and difficulty tolerating a full lactose load.
This is why I heart gentlease. It is reduced lactose so it keeps the enzyme lactase working in the gut, and partially broken down proteins - to make digestion easier.

It is normal to switch formulas, especially for issues such as spit up and milk pro allergy.

Personally, my DS was BF for 3mths -and was on Enfamil w/o problems from get go. There was a few weeks were he did use gentlease.

My DD was bf for 6mths, then on every single formula. She was a spitty baby, so I tried gentlease, nutramigen then AR - whiched worked fab. She grew out of it and is now on Enfamil

I pesonally find Enfamil & Good start products to be the most agreeable. I think b/c they are whey predominent, like BM, where as similac products are caesin predominent - which is the curd of milk and more difficult to digest.

Re: DH is gonna think I'm nuts, but I have to ask (Formula related)

Started on Similac Advance at the hospital, then they quickly switched her to Similac Alimentum after she choked on in and stopped breathing. They test her stool which was negative for blood (no allergy) but determined she had difficulty digesting the large protein molecules of the regular formula. Lucky my insurance covers it! Also at 3 1/2 months old she stopped breathing again and the ER Dr diagnosed her with silent reflux. She has been on Zantac which seems to help her.
