Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
and pass the three hour?
If you did fail the 1 hour did you fast first? Did you take it in the morning or afternoon?
I am so annoyed I failed my 1 hour test but I didn't with my DS, so I think it may have something to do with the fact that I took the test at 4:00 pm and not in the morning like I did with DS.

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
OK, here was my story...
With DS, I failed the 1 hour. I had it in the late afternoon. I ate a chocolate, chocolate chip muffin on the train ride home before I took the test and failed by a very small margin. (I blame the muffin.
I took the 3 hour and passed.
With this pregnancy, I took the 1 hour in the morning and did not eat before I went and I passed it.
There is a very good chance you will pass the 3 hour!

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
What you eat throughout the day has no bearing on whether you pass the test or not. It's how your body processess the glucose drink. You either have GD or you don't, eating carbs/sugars or not pior to your test will not affect the outcome.
With that said, many women have failed the one hour and have gone on to pass the 3 hour. (Unfortunately, I was not one of them!)

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
I took the one hour in the morning and fasted.
My fasting glucose level was very low, my glucose level after the drink was over 20 pts higher than passing.
I took the three hour and passed.

totally agree - your body should produce enough insulin to cover whatever you are eating, whenever you are eating it. If not, there is an issue. However, as MrsRbk said, many fail the one hour but pass the 3 hour test. My friends always ask me what to eat or what not to eat before the test b/c I am diabetic and they think i can give them a way to "beat" the test. But i always tell them to eat normally - don't you want to have accurate results and deal with the accurate results instead of trying to "beat" the results.

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
I certainly want accurate results but I was discussing with a friend and her doctor told her to have the 1 hour test and to fast before it, while mine didn't and I wanted to see if there was a correlation, especially since the first time I did it was first thing in the morning and this time around it was in the evening.

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
Fasting is the recommended method... as a person who actually does the testing i can tell you there is actually difference with your results when you do and do not fast... the reason you fast is because they want you to start at your baseline sugar levels... your body has a renal limit of how much sugar it will actually process and that is how they determine if you are a diabetic... it is extremely important when you have the three hour since they draw your blood hourly (sometimes even more frequently) and will actually plot out the results and look at the plot (think graphing paper graphs)... IF you have eaten before then your baseline level will be elevated so then when you drink the glucose you are going to have falsely elevated results.... to easily explain.. if you fast prior then your glucose starts at 60.. you drink the drink it will go up, lets say 50pts to 110.. which is normal... NOW if you do not fast your baseline when you drink could be 90... add the 50 on and your base is 140.. which is closer to the positive result level....

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
With DD I passed the 1 hours.
This time, I failed it by 2 points. I did not fast for it (but didn't last time either). I ate a lean protein beforehand.
I took the 3 hours and passed-that one was fasting.l

Don't know all the details, but my BFF failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour.
I'm only 15 1/2 weeks so I haven't taken the test yet.

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
i failed the 1 hr. with dd by only a couple of points. i passed the 3 hr. but if they only looked at the first hour's score i would have failed. apparently i don't process the sugar that fast but i do it fine with a little extra time. pray i don't have to do the 3 hr. this time!

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
I failed the one hour and had to take the 3 hour. My doc said that of the people who fail the 1 hr only 15% actually have GD.
U have to fast the night before - i think it was nothing to eat or drink besides water after 8pm and then i had to go to the lab at 8am. they take your blood when u get there to determine your fasting level - they want it below 95. then u drink the sugar drink and they take it once an hour on the hour. they look at those three levels to see how many of those you pass. i think if u fail more than 2 of the 4 levels they consider you GD.
i unfortunately failed the 3 hour and am dealing with GD. my fasting level was 93 and then i failed the other 3 levels. there's not much u can really do to prepare besides fasting. i ate a salad for dinner with no carbs the night before and still failed.... you either have it or you don't.

I failed the 1 hr and passed the 3 hr with flying colors.
I had failed the 1 hr by 2 points, then passed all 3 parts of the 3 hr.

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
I failed the one hour too. I wasn't able to take the 3 hour because the drink kept making me sick. So my OB sent me for a 2 hour test. I had to go to the lab and get a fasting blood test, then go and eat breakfast and then go back later and have blood drawn. I passed. But I apparently developed it in my last month anyway. Was induced because my blood sugars were so high and they couldn't send me home....

With DS#1, I failed the 1 hr and passed the 3 hr. I took it first thing in the morning. With DS#2, I passed the 1 hr but took it in the afternoon.
I would try to schedule the 3 hr for the morning!

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
During my 1st pregnancy, I did not fast and failed the 1 hour. I went on to pass the 3 hour test. This time around, I smartened up and fasted for the 1 hour. I passed!

not a problem... i actually work in the lab and have taught phlebotomy (blood drawing) for about 9 years... most people do not realize how important the fasting process is... my own brother has a cholesterol result through the roof because he belonged to a chili testing group and was eating chilie everyday for a week....

Re: Did anyone else fail their 1 hour gestational diabetes
I am mostly nervous because I didn't fail by a few points. I think my doc said he likes to see results less than 130 and mine were 180.
