Did anyone else receive a Star Rebate check?
Yesterday I received a Star Rebate Check. For some reason, I am confused. I wasn't expecting it. Did anyone else get it and do they normally send these out? I can't recall past years.

We got ours today - just like last year it will go to our increased school tax that is due next month. I wish the state would just save the processing cost on this mess and increase the state aid to our SD. Its such a waste.

You most likely did get one last year if you got a check this year. You did not have to reapply for it this year. This is a rebate in addition to what you already receive on your taxes.
I had to apply for it this year because we closed on our house in 2007, so we were not eligible for it last year.

The whole STAR process is a waste of resources & another way to keep things complicated & confusing.
Rather than pay the government employees to run the program, the mailings, the website, the accounting & everything else they should just lower the taxes to a level the state can handle and would benefit each homeowner appropriately.
They bet on people not applying & crap like that, but then its costs a fortune to 'run' the program.
Its another travesty of local government that we've been molded to accept.

Thank you. But I mean "physically" get it, get the check in my hands. I have a mailman who is notorious for delivering the wrong mail and let's just say I have a neighbor whom I suspect would not be so polite if he got my mail...so I have to check to make sure somehow that I got all checks in previous years.

I don't know personally, there's no place I know to look. But I know I get one every year.
I may call the star program to see where mine is since I didn't get it yet.

They keep the STAR program probably as a fall back position if they ever have to quickly raise taxes across the board.
In the Town Of Hempstead, they are only allowed to raise taxes by so much per year. I believe it's a law.
If the governor decides to cancel the Star program, they are effectively raising your taxes by a lot more, and they are doing it legally.

Whatever the reason, I'm sure its designed as a loophole that works in the governments favor. I would bet if you added up the salary of every incompetent employee in your town hall STAR department, along with all of the other costs associated with it on the state level, it actually costs us more than we save.
