Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

I keep reading all these posts about solids and what was started when.

I JUST started solids about 2 weeks ago and just cereal. I gave her sweet potatoes for the first time 2 days ago. She is about 5.5 months and I just didnt see the rush in doing it.

I have a ped appt on thursday and Im wondering if this will be a problem.

Same here. We started cereal right before she turned 6 months, maybe 5.5 months, but didn't start fruits/veggies until after 6 months.

I didn't start Logan until about 5.5 months too.

They say anywhere between 4-6 months is good.

He's two now and he's a GREAT eater. Always has been.

DD is 7.5 months and now I am starting to give her more solids sinceshe is very interested in what we eat. I started her at 4 months but I never pushed it. If she ate 3 bites of applesause that was fine because the breast milk was the main focus.

I didn't start until 6 months either and was very slow about it. And I didn't give yogurt until around 9 months, if that makes you feel better Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

Same here, we didn't see the rush either and neither does our ped. We didn't start veggies and fruit until DS was 6 months. I think I read somewhere that the Academy of Pediatrics recommends starting solids now at 6 months so you are right on schedule. Some of my friends peds started solids so much younger, I guess they all have their own way of doing things.

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

We started at about 6 mo. I didn't think that was on the later side - it is what our ped recc and I read up on it and it seems to be the best thing for them for many reasons in many cases - I think also the AAP recc waiting until this point as well - so i wouldn't consider it late - i would consider it right on timeChat Icon

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

My DD is big, and we just started rice cereal at late 5 mths. My ped wanted me to do this and I agreed. I felt there was no rush. Too many people I know try to rush their baby to grow up, offering babies who keep spitting cereal out food after food. A baby is NOT a little adult or a little toy IMO. I want DD to be ready. I haven't even attempted to let her drink from a sippy cup yet at 7 mths old. I feel there is no rush.

My ped (who agreed with the great chart in Wholesomebabyfood.com) said 8 mths for yogurt. So that's when we will start it. I am not rushing to give anything...when she is ready for a new food, if she is the right age, I will give it.

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

Samantha is a week behind Sadie and I have not started her on solids yet. I do not intend on starting until after her 6 month well visit next month. Also my ped wanted me to wait until then too which I'm totally fine with because I'm perfectly happy not having that one more thing to fit into my day at the momentChat Icon

I started 7-8 months but regretted it because it led to a long battle with gagging issues. He eventually got over it.

You started earlier than I did. We didn't start cereal until 6 months, then veggies about 2 weeks after that. You're doing fine!

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

we tried starting him on cereal at 4 months and he wanted no part of it. we tried again at 5 months and it took him a few days but he got the hang of it.

looking back i might have rushed him a bit, i will try and wait for "ready" signs with the next one before starting.

I started cereal at 5.5 months and veggies at 6 months. This was per my peditrician and I was fine
with it.

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

I gave Ryan cereal at 4 months (once) and decided I didn't want to rush it.

So at 6 months I re-introduced cereal. And at 6.5 months we started veggies.

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?

I'm EBFing and didn't start solids until a week before DS turned 6 months. I wanted to start before his 6 month appointment b/c I knew I'd have a bunch of questions.

There's no issue at all with waiting to start solids. Due to allergy and obesity concerns, the recommendation is to start at 6 months.

ETA: Based on my pediatrician's recommendation, I don't plan on introducing yogurt or meat until 8-9 months.
