You're fine!! We tried to give food to DS at 5 months, and he refused to open his mouth-clamped shut. Only at around 6 months did he 'get it' and start opening up for foods.

I didn't start DD until she was 6 months & I plan to do the same with DS. DD did not take so well to the solids at 6 months so after a week of trying & crying out of frustration everytime because she flat out refused, I gave up & tried again at 7 months. She started finally taking solids at 7 months.

We started cereals at 6 months and 3 weeks later started to add veggies and fruits.

Re: Did anyone else start solids on the "later" side?
We skipped baby foods for both our girls. They went straight to soft table foods. My oldest DD was 7 months old.
My younger DD had gagging problems from the first time we tried(at 6 months) until 8 months, she wouldn't even eat breastmilk or formula off a spoon until 8 months old. I don't think starting later has anything to do with gagging, some babies just do it. One day (at 8 months old) she woke up and wanted real foods, so we tried some soft table foods that day and her gagging disappeared.
Both my girls are great non picky eaters at 1 1/2 years old and 3 years old. My girls are known for great eating, so starting late and not rushing didn't harm them in the least.
a book on baby-led solids
