Did anyone fly first class for their HM? Or know someone who did?
Just wondering...
If so, did you book first class in advance? Pay for an upgrade at the airport? Get it FREE because you were HMers?
I'm considering changing our HM from a Caribbean Cruise to Rome and Florence, because its the SAME PRICE- amazing right? (While its a holiday week for American tourism, Its european offseason).
If I end up doing this, I have some miles that I can apply, but I'm not sure if I should pay for it up front, or just hope for availability and a discounted rate at the airport.
Airfare into Rome and out of Florence is only coming in at $600 roundtrip right now - which is pretty great....we paid $1050 in July 2005!
I'm expecting to fly coach - but Rich has never been on a plane more than 4 hours. If I have the first class opportunity, I'd love to make the trip easier for him!
Thanks

I dont believe they give free upgrades at the airport at the time of travel since the whole 9/11 thing, and if you payfor an upgrade at the airport it will most likely be a lot more $$$ than if you can find a deal online now.... If you can fly 1st class DO IT!!! Its great flying 1st on international flights.

They gave us first class to Hawaii (pre-9/11).
If you have enough miles you can upgrade to first class if you pay a full coach fare (which is $$$$$).

Re: Did anyone fly first class for their HM? Or know someone who did?
I would do it if you can swing it. DH and I flew coach to Hawaii and we were ok on the trip there because we had emergency row seats. The trip back was miserable because we didnt get that lucky a second time. We arent tiny people.
If you are not able to swing first class, and you have to fly coach, you can try to get emergency row seats depending on the plane. There is a considerable amount of leg room. However, I think that has to be done within 24 hours of the flight. If you are inclined to do that, make sure you get the SECOND of the two rows as the first row does not recline. Just a suggestion. Good luck.

I agree. DH travels some for work, and they wouldn't give us free upgrades. We checked when we got to the airport, and we even tried the HM angle. He would have had to use his miles and pay $$ for my upgrade, which wasn't worth it.
If you can get a good rate flying first class now, I say go for it. Afterall, when will you able to justify paying the extra $$ again??

The specific airline is Delta/Air France/Alitalia
I don't know if that helps anyone!

Re: Did anyone fly first class for their HM? Or know someone who did?
We booked it in advance.
Cashed in something like 90,000 frequent flier miles a piece.
But for the flight to Hawaii non-stop it was AWESOME and so worth it!!
If you have to choose to just do first class one way, I recommend to do it on the way home.
I know a lot of people who choose just to do it on the way TO the vacation thinking it's a nice "kick-off" but you'll feel so much better transitioning back to the real world if you reverse it and take 1st class on the way home.

Re: Did anyone fly first class for their HM? Or know someone who did?
On our HM to Hawaii, they moved us up to first class for the second leg of the trip because DH handled a medical emergency on the plane on the NY to LA part. They were so so so happy he was there because they told us they would have had to have landed the plane otherwise. When they found out it was our HM, the stewardesses were literally THROWING bottles of champagne at us. So we ended up going 1st class from LA to Kauai which was great. Coming back, we couldn't get first class from Kona to LA, but they gave it to us again from LA to Newark.
Plus - we had used miles for the original tickets so this was an even greater perk!

Re: Did anyone fly first class for their HM? Or know someone who did?
We upgraded at the airport (going and coming) - it was cheaper than if we had booked it in advance (they were actually asking people if they wanted to upgrade for a reduced price). Totally worth it being that our flight was 9+ hours (to Greece).
When are you getting married? If it's in August I would reconsider Europe...b/c it is their holiday month a lot of places (restaurants, shops, etc.) shut down while the European's go on holiday.
Edited - just saw you were getting married in November...go for it!

We flew first class-- bought coach tickets and upgraded on miles.
It was caribbean/domestic and while it is better than coach-- it's no great shakes.
I think it is totally worth it when travelling overseas though-- you should go for it!
I try to fly first class whenever we can-- It's more valuable to use miles for this IMO.

We used miles for first class...best thing we ever did but now I don't like to travel with the "commoners" in coach anymore. I was spoiled!

Re: Did anyone fly first class for their HM? Or know someone who did?
We flew first class on our HM. It was the best thing we ever did. I didnt want to take the chance of trying to upgrade at the airport. I wanted them to be guaranteed.
First class seats are just so worth it. I never thought it until I sat in them. DH says he'll never go back to coach but we cant afford first class every time we go away, so thats out. But if you have the opportunity, definitely go for it.

It's cheaper to upgrade when you check in, though availability isn't guaranteed.
I agree with the poster who said it's a good idea to upgrade on the way home. It would be a nice wrap up.

Re: Did anyone fly first class for their HM? Or know someone who did?
We did (business class actually) but it was a last minute thing. Neither of us had flown internationally and I guess we were spoiled by the comfort of Jet Blue so when we got on this plane and realized we had to spend 14 hours like that we upgraded. They didn't care that we were honeymooners. We paid $1200 per person one way to do it and we did it round trip.
