did anyone get EI services for walking late?

If so when did you get it. DD is turning 16 mos tomorrow..I know I'm panicking for nothing, and she is walking with me basically holding on to one pinky on one hand and I know it'll come, but I just feel like she's not going to anytime soon. She started letting go and trying to take one or two steps towards me over the weekend, but still will not get up and stand without having to pull up onto something....my ped is telling me I'm worrying too much bc she's obviously progressing, but I feel like she's stuck...she started cruising at 10 mos and now at 16 mos she has made progress but I just don't see it happening anytime soon...I know she's not really considered late until 18 mos...I'm just getting more and more worried by the day...

Sorry DD didn't get EI, so I can't offer any advice on that front but I just wanted to let you know that DD didn't start to stand without pulling up on anything until a month after starting to walk. Like you, I also thought they have to stand up on their own before walking and that wasn't the case for DD.

Abby was 2 days shy of 16 months before she walked independently. 18 months is usually the cut off, but if you feel strongly enough, you can always get your DC evaluated.

My friend had her DS evaluated around 18/19 months and he qualified. By the time services started he was walking.

Leslie, was there an obvious progression with Abby or did she just get up and go one day?

So what Christopher!

He walked across the room the first time that he did it too, and at my parents house!

Re: did anyone get EI services for walking late?

i had DS evaled for PT when he wasnt walking.. they told me he would not wualify for walking only until he reaches 18 months.

18 months is the cut off for toddlers and walking.. unless there are other factors you see wrong

BTW DS walked 16 months and 3 days

Thx! My ped is sooo not worried about it, and he's generally not laid back about things, he said his oldest daughter didn't walk until she was 17 mos..the thing is do I see her walking in 3 days no...she doesn't want to..that's the thing...esp when she's somewhere new, she could care less about walking, even holding my hand, she screams and wants to just crawl, she'll walk at home holding on to my hand....I just am finding it hard to believe that she's just going to go off one day out of the blue I don't see it happeningChat Icon

Re: did anyone get EI services for walking late?

My DS qualified for services at around 16 months, but he had other delays, it wasn't just because he was a late walker.

The funny thing is, though, that he wasn't referred for not walking, he was referred for speech. When I met with the service coordinator for the county, she suggested the PT eval.

If I were you I would just get her evaluated and see what they say. Her services will depend on the reason she is not walking. For instance if they think she has some low muscle tone they may give her services. On the other hand if they think she is just a little late with walking and do not see any problem they will not give it. Just get her eveluated and see what they say.

Reilly didn't start walking until she turned 17 months. Your DD and mine are probably just lazy bones. Chat Icon

I got my DD evaluated at 14 months and she qualified. It wasn't that she wasn't walking, but I just felt that she was late on her overall gross motor skills from about 9 or 10 months or so onward. She did not crawl until shortly after she turned 1. She didn't pull to stand or start cruising until 15-16 months. She finally walked at 19 months!!!

She qualified for services at 14 months - she had low muscle tone. Basically, she just needed more work and more time to hit her gross motor milestones. But once she hit them...well, now at 2, she runs around like a maniac!

I would definitely get your DC evaluated if your concerned. Worst case scenario, DC doesn't qualify.

Thx, see DD crawled at 7.5 mos pulled to stand and started to cruise at 10 mos, my ped thinks that she's just cautious and it's a confidence thing..so he's not sending her to be evaluated...can I get her evaluated without a peds referral?

Gabi, I think our DD's are very similiar..Chat Icon I think partially she's lazy and partially she's really really cautious....

You can get her evaluated without a Ped's approval.

I didn't think DS would just start walking out of the blue either, but he did. He's also super cautious and wouldn't walk unless he was holding onto something. Then, right before he turned 15 months, he threw a ball and walked after it. I couldn't believe it. He obviously knew how to walk, but was afraid of letting go/falling. He still hates to fall. It will happen. Chat Icon

Is there anything that she really loves that she might be willing to walk towards? I'd try to encourage DS to walk, but he didn't do it until he felt ready. He's stubborn and won't do something unless he wants to.

Always go with your gut, it doesn't hurt to get her evaluated. However, what you described just sounds like she is very cautious and doesn't have the confidence to do it on her own yet.

yup we actually showed the ped what she's doing etc..and he said that he's seen a lot of kids in his years and he has no issue sending kids for evaluations and from what he sees there is no reason...I feel like I'm thinking this route bc a. I tend to be ultra neurotic on certain things and b. I think I'm getting frustrated which I know is a bad thing

my DS didn't walk until almost 17 months and he didn't stand up to walk on his own (without pulling up) for some time after that. then he went right to running and jumping soon after. He was also cautious. I knew he could push things and walk he just was afraid to let go. I also think being the 2nd child (a 2 under 2er) he liked to be held since his sister was so demanding of my attention.

My DD was an early walker (11 months) so I worried about DS. I did have him evaluated because he has an issue with being a toe walker and his left foot being flat and turning out. He falls alot. He didn't qualify. A few months later the ped actually referred us to a pediatric ortho and we just went last week (he's 22 months now) and the ortho wants to give him 6 more months before he recommends any therapy or brace.

So all that being said, I'd give her more time. The ortho said there's a HUGE range for walking and it's a very hard skill that we adults often take for granted. I'm sure she'll be off and running before you know it!!!

ETA: yes he did just take off one day out of the blue. I didn't think he would, but he did.

As you know we are in the same position with DS. I spoke to my ped who gave me the number for an agency. My ped was not sure that he would qualify but I figure that it can't hurt. Chat Icon
