Just like nutrasweet is your chewing gum is going to kill you... Even in the article it says, "They say that over time, cortisol increases the risk of severe attachment disorders" I don't think that by over time they mean for three nights in a child who is loved and cared for. So, she may have heard that, but its so exaggerated.

You know what else can cause brain damage? Consistent sleep deprivation.

Yes, I agree. It was actually my ped that told me repeatedly I needed to let DS CIO. I have spoken to numerous friends on this issue and their peds have all told them the same thing.

I think the comments of this dr. are flawed - they based their conclusions on studying russian ORPHANS??? Um, hello, I think there is a little more to their disorder than CIO! I think I would need a LITTLE more than this to actually consider this conclusion!

Re: Did anyone see Dr. Ferber on Nightline last night?

UGGGGGGGGGGH! This article INFURIATES me!!!

I could cry writing this.....I am exhausted. I have an almost three year old daughter who doesn't sleep - never did. I can't even tell you how tired I am and how many nights I have been up for HOURS in the middle of the night this week.

I have tried CIO, Co sleeping, attachment parenting, sound machines, rocking, bottles, pacifiers (When she was younger), and even Feng Shui, etc....

I am so sick of doctors who are full advice, and doctors that have no advice at all. I am sorry - but how dare someone insinuate that if you let a child CIO they are going to be the next hitler. It's absurd, and honestly insulting. I am wondering how many nights he stayed up with his wife trying to get their kids to sleep - probably none. And maybe he has never seen a tired toddler at 4pm - talk about the next hitler.

These articles scare me - and I think without merit. Is my kid going to be a dictator, behind in school, brain damaged because I can't get her to sleep???

There is not enough evidence on sleep methods to be putting out articles like this. And it is unfair to us moms who are just doing the best we can and trying to catch a few zzz's inbetween.

I would have loved to co-sleep but, i honestly don't know how people are able to sleep doing this? I was constantly worrying that I was going to roll onto DS (even though I am a very light sleeper), that he was going to crawl over the pillows or off the end of the bed and hurt himself, or that he would get wedged in something and suffocated.

You must have a very big bed to not have to worry about these things! If not, I'm curious how you arrange everyone - honestly!`

I totally agree with you! And, if it is crying that causes the problems what about babies that are colicky and cry for no reason all the time? My mom tells me I cried all the time whether she held me or not for most of my first year. And, I don't have any brain damage! In fact, I am considered pretty smart Chat Icon

But, ofcourse, the worry wart I am, I now have these statements in the back of my head Chat Icon But, honestly, in our situation - we had no other choice.

Re: Did anyone see Dr. Ferber on Nightline last night?

Im not a HUGE fan of CIO, but I will say I did see the nightline and those people were NUTSO.

He was saying how Adolf hilter had too much cortisol and we were raising hitlers and husseins because of CIO.

Anyone who makes that comparision is not all there and should be considered a good reliable SOURCE for info.
