Here is how my DH learned to give a bath in the kitchen sink.

no, but it does teach you responsibility.
they need to be fed, bathed, walked, cleaned up after, played with, loved the list goes on and on. 
i think its a great first step for a newlywed couple!

We didn't get a dog until after we had kids, but I would say "no way" to this.
A dog and a child = totally different.

I think a dog does prepare you for being a parent. The dog is not a child, we all know that, but some of the things that you do with the dog prepares you for what you will be doing with your child in the future. We had to look for a great Vet for Capt bob, a good trainer and the best food. We also go to puppy play group with him, which you will have to do for your child and get to meet other dog owners. You have to enforce rules with your dog and both partners have to agree on how you want to deal with raising the dog.
In my opinion having a dog definitely prepare for parenthood.

of course a dog or any other pet is not going to completely prepare or teach you how to be a parent.
But I do think it is a good stepping stone to start with.

I don't have a dog, but I always laugh when I hear people say this because I don't see how it could.
Also, almost everyone I know that got a dog before kids regrets it and says they wish they hadn't.
I honestly never want to have pets but will maybe give in to DH and the kids in a few years-when the chaos of toddlers and babies passes. Even that is a stretch. I just don't understand the desire to add more chaos to our lives (unless it's the chaos of a third child )

For us getting a dog def reeled us in abit from being carefree and without responsibilty for another being.
So in that regard, getting a dog did force us to put another being's priorities over our own wishes at times. We got used to spending alot more time in, b/c our male dog is just unable to stay home alone for long periods without going insane. So when baby came along, at least we were already used to some major life changes.
Pros to baby...baby can come with you most places. Dog cant.
Cons to baby...baby cant EVER be left alone. Dog can.
So when you add it all up, I do feel a dog just laid the ground work for us to learn to take care of another being other than ourselves.

When your dog is sick, you are upset. You bring them to the vet.
You have to feed them. Let them out to do their business. Keep them clean. You are responsible for those things. Just as you are responsible for a child.
For us, it was good practice. Is it the same as having a child? Hell to the NO. But it's a good way to get your feet wet with some responsibility.

I don't know if I am qualified to answer because we have two cats, no dogs, but no way!
Nothing, not out cats, not my young sibs, not our nieces and nephews, nothing prepared us for parenting.
And as much as Tigger and Skittles are our babies and I love them to death, they are not and never will be on par with Sienna.

I actually would say yes.
We got 2 puppies right before DH and I got married and it did give us a sense of responsibility towards another living creature than the 2 of us.
It's not the same as a child of course but it's a way to start caring for somebody else i.e. cleaning poopie accidents, pukes, waking up at 5pm because someone's got to go peepee, etc...
My dogs were trained by the time they were 3 months to sit and do what I wanted them to do though.

I never had a dog, only cats.
I joke that we chose the cats because they are SO much less work and responsibility than dogs- and that goes to prove we weren't ready to have kids!
Having said that, I really don't think ANYTHING can prepare you for being a parent.
That hit me like a ton of bricks and is the hardest thing I have ever done.
I don't think having a dog would have made the sleepless nights, the non stop crying, etc any easier on us.

Nope, not at all. Dogs sleep through the night and you can crate them and leave them home for a few hours at a time. They only eat once a day, and its just such a whole other level to have a baby. I love Oreo to pieces, but he does not compare to a baby at all.

Maybe a little...DH and I were so carefree--we would come and go as we pleased with no responsibility aside from the one we had to each other. Once we got a puppy we suddenly had a dependent. In some ways it helped us grow up a little bit. It was right around this time that we stopped going into Manhattan on weeknights and made sure that we scheduled things with respect to having time to walk the dog, play with the dog, etc. Having a pet prepared us for the idea that our freedom to come and go as we pleased was gone and that someone else relied on us.
Nothing else about having a dog is like having a baby

NOPE! but she did have major medical issues that somewhat prepped me for the money-thing and having patience etc. other than that no. having kids was way more responsibility and work.
my dog died the day my DS was born  kerie: your dachshund is a twin of mine and i love the pics you posted! 
 They are a very special breed. We had some professional family photos done on the beach & I haven't even posted those yet. There's my DS just walking with us on the beach and there is my 20lb dachshund exerting about 80 lbs of pull on the leash. I can't imagine losing my dog the day I had my baby.

it's not the same thing, but I do think it prepares you - or at least eases you into the lifestyle. You can't just leave from work to the airport and hop on a plane witha dog.

Lola prepared me 1000000000% .. I was 41 when i got her. I had never taken care of anything other than myself in my life. Not only did she prepare me but she helped me live through the horror and disappointments of infertility.. I treat her like my first born.. She gets even more attention than ever since dd is a little older.. We both play with her now.. I cant imagine training my dog now after having dd.. She needed 2 years of my life to become the "perfect dog" for us.
When you get a puppy you have to wake up every 2 hours for the first few weeks.. They cant hold in there pee pee at 8 weeks.. I took this very seriously.. I wipe her cooley if she does poop.. I clean her paws off if its rainy or muddy out before she comes in the house.. i give her monthly meds, clean her eyes so they dont get that ugly orange gook.. I buy her special food.. She is a handful.

I totally vote get the dog AFTER the kids.
I got my pup when my kids were 10, 2, 1 and 3 months. They all bonded and the dog is great with them.
While my dog thinks I gave birth to her; there is a big difference between the dog and the kids. I come and go as I please with the kids and the dog stays home. I can't come and go with the dog and leave the kids home.
Although sometimes I wish I could.
I can understand the concept of getting the dog first. A dog is a big responsibilty and requires a lot of TLC. A dog also gives you unconditional love and makes you feel needed. So getting a dog first is a definitle way to get your feet wet...but just your feet.
