Did I do the wrong thing??
My boss just bought a dog for his young kids. He went to Shake-A-Paw (). When I found out, I gave him a brief history of my situation with SAP... I had no intention of scaring him or making him regret his decision, I just sort of wanted to give him a "buyer beware" PAS. Also to let him know to sign up for pet insurance ASAP to avoid huge vet bills down the road if he becomes a "victim" of SAP.
He looks pissssed and annoyed and scared that he did the wrong thing.
Should I have kept my mouth shut and just congratulated him on the new dog?

I guess you should have kept quiet only because its after the fact.. Maybe you can go over to him and say you over reacted a little.. Before I ever heard of a puppy mill I purchased my dog from there and I have never had a problem with her ever.. So you can even say that if you want.. And i do know people who have bought there dogs there too that have very healthy dogs as well..
Thanks to LIF I have been educated since and would never ever do this again.. I really can not believe how ignorant I was.. I try to discourage people before they get there pets there but always wish them well if they have already gone through twith the purchase.. I really understand your initial reaction and we are all not perfect in this world and say things we shouldnt.. Just try to clear it up as humbly and best that you can and remember this as one of those lifes lessons.." you cant un-ring a bell"...

I dont think you did the wrong thing - you were just trying to be helpful. Unfortunately, lots of people (myself included!) dont always research the places they plan on getting their pets from.

Re: Did I do the wrong thing??
Thanks for the input.
I definitely apolgized for scaring him. That sooo wasn't my intention. And I didn't jump down his back, I think I was pretty subtle and sensitive to the fact that what's done is done. I just feel bad and don't want him to be blindsided like we were.

Re: Did I do the wrong thing??
We bought our first dog 3 1/2 years ago from shake a paw and we were very lucky.. Chico had a little cough but we caught it right away and he's totally healthy!!
ETA: I know that you should never buy a dog from a pet store and while we were very luck with Chico, I would never buy one from a pet store ever again

agreed!!! I think in essence you were just trying to be helpful which is understandable!!! But at the same time , its after the fact so your input may not go very far other than to either piss him off or worry him more. I also want to add that I too made the mistake of getting my pup at shake-a-paw as well. And This was before I knew about puppy mills, so I smack myself all of the time for being so ignorant. But luckily my dog is almost 2 and has never had any serious issues..besides kennel cough and parasites when she was a puppy (which medication took care of after a few weeks). I thank god every day that we got "one of the lucky ones". So just remember not all dogs purchased there will have problems..

Re: Did I do the wrong thing??
I actually think you did the right thing. Its the TRUTH. and it may help in the future should his pet get sick. Lets hope not but we know it does happen.
He may seek treatment quicker, because of the information you told him. Instead of letting it go, thinking its nothing. The info you gave him may save the dogs life!
I didn't know about buying a dog from a store when I got my pug 8 years ago. At 10 months old he became VERY sick. Thankfully we were quick to have him looked at and he had to have brain surgery. His life was saved, but had we not taken him to the vet as soon as we did, he would have died.
You know what his sytoms were? he walked with his head turned to the left a little. Nothing that looked life threatening. I worry a lot, but in this instance I was so glad I took him in! It was all from being in-bred at a puppy mill.
So I think you did the right thing. Sometimes people don't like hearing the truth, and its sad you had to tell him AFTER, but had you known he was even considering the purchase prior to making it, I'm sure you would have given him the exact same advice.

Re: Did I do the wrong thing??
Kim...Just FYI... If you want there is a website named petshoppuppies.org. Its a site where you can look further into your puppies history. Unfortunately it will not tell you if the puppy came from a puppy mill or if it is 100% pure breed. As taken from the website: "It doesn't know what diseases they may have or carry, and it doesn't know the temperament of the parents. It cannot not help you obtain AKC papers, or any registration papers for that matter. Lastly it can not help you in your dispute against a breeder, broker, or pet store." But it will it will tell you problems that other people have encountered from the same pet store and/or breeder name. It will also give you the USDA reports for that breeder. I used this for my dog and it was somewhat helpful. Its just highlights things to look out for healthwise that other puppies have suffered from. Its 100% free as well. So your friend my find this helpful

I agree.
I consider that many people go back and get more dogs from the same place if they do get lucky the first time. I encountered this with some people I met in our vet's waiting room. I didn't give them a lecture, but when they said that the puppy was very sick and where they got him, I said, "Ooooh." and they said "Yea, we know now. We didn't know how bad they were the first time." So they were return customers.
I know it's not polite conversation but what's a little embarrassment compared to funding puppy mills and the heartbreak and cost of a sick pet? That's the way I look at it. Some people don't care where they get their dog from though, so I feel them out. If they sound defensive, I drop it, because an argument will probably have the reverse affect. And my point is really about the animal, not the person.
