ummmmmmm theyre most definatly NOT! i buy from small boutiques... not big corporate chains..... why would you even say that? i used to work at a boutique and dealt first hand with the actual deisgners & artists.
alot of my clothes are from Challengher NYC which she makes IN HER SHOP IN BROOKLYN. you can go there any given day and see her deisgning & sewing.
if youre so sure, id love to put money on it... and then ill take you to them directly.
You think small boutiques don't purchase goods from overseas!?!
im not saying maybe they dont, im saying that is not what i buy..... i buy from LOCAL artists. i belive in giving them business, and their goods are often very very well made.
why are you acting as if you cant buy America?

here is a shop where i get american made: clothes, jewelry, hats, bags, stockings, and home decor.... and other chotchkas
red pearl this is just ONE example.
and here is an interview with the owner/designer/seamstress of ChallengherNYC. her site is not up yet. ALL of her products are made 100% in brooklyn. she makes womens clothing, little girl dresses, bags, pillows, etc.... she also carries jewelry and cards of local deisgners interview with christine

All I'm stating is that the very boutiques you shop at most likely buy imported goods, along with items made by local artists.

It doesn't state on any of those links they sell American Made or even Brooklyn Made items exclusively. They may carry items made locally and suppost local artists, but they also buy goods manufactured overseas (I'd imagine from India and Vietnam based on the stores you posted.)

im certainly not becoming hostile, im just trying to tell you that it is entirely possible to buy american made goods... and i feel like everytime i say that you have to oppose it.
i never once said everything in the palces i shop are american made (although i CAN say that for places like Challengher), i am saying that is is very easy to buy american if you so choose to though.

Did i say they sold american made items exclusively?? no, i did not. Red Pearl for one, i know gets from all over the world. paris and china included.
Challengher interview, i realized was totally irrelevant. I wish her site was up, but it isnt yet. Her stuff I can tell you is entirely Brooklyn made. all of it. If you wish to ask her i could give you her email address. She makes 99% of the stuff sold in the store... except some earrings by Phoebe, a local artist and some handmade cards from someone i am not sure who.
Like i said, please dont twist my words around, i never said the palces i buy from sold american items exclusively, i am saying that these are some examples of where you CAN get american made goods.

I don't need her email address. I would just call.
You make it sound as if a customer could walk into any of the stores and buy American made goods right off the shelf, which isn't the case except for maybe Challengher.

I personally don't find so BUT, it is probably easier where i live than say LI. LI has so many corporate stores and chains like Kmart, Target, Walmart... etc... In my town, we have small businesses. So many get some of their porducts from local people.
I could go on a shopping spree in Wiliamsburg and not buy one thing from China..... on LI i think i would have a very very very difficult time doing so.
*please note for future reference, SOME things i own are in fact from china, i am sure... but i try my best to NOT. i would say nowadays maybe 5% of all things i buy are from china. or less. most of the time i dont know it until after the fact.

lol im retarded, thats right, you could just call! [718-387-6228]
well, you could if you wanted to. you coudl go to a handful of stores and buy stuff of the shelves that are made in wherever.... nyc, brooklyn, america in general.
i just made a post which you probably havent seen yet explaining i htink it is easier here in small towns like this part of brooklyn rather then long island and big suburbs. obviously, if you walk in to a target its going to be hard to buy american.

Re: Did we know Uggs were made in CHINA?
Posted by lo13lo13 So what exactly is a REAL pair of sheepskin boots?? Is there a brand or something?
I mean getting something that is all Australian made, since they started this whole Ugg boot thing. B/c the UGG brand is so mass produced you can get a better quality Ugg boot.
There isnt a brand per se, but if you do some shopping you can find a sheepskin store, and they are better quality IMO. Someone on here posted a link a few months ago to one brand. I am sorry I dont remember the exact name.

I bet you at least 50% of the items in your home are imported, regardless of where you purchased them.
My DH has a showroom on Madison and right behind that Target buyer is a small boutique owner from Brooklyn. The boutique owners just buy smaller quantities.

if you want to buy american you make it happen. if you dont, you dont.
i think you think it is harder than it is and maybe i htink it is easier than it is.
lets agree to disagree.

I'm just really looking for a comfy, warm boot, I don't care if they say Ugg or not!! I like the concept of the sheepskin boot. If anyone knows any other good brands I'm open to suggestions!!

I think part of the point Chatham is trying to make is that is difficult to know for sure that your stuff is made here.
If I owned a store and purchased only clothing items from local artists, I could market them as American made, even if those artists bought their zippers/buttons/cloth etc from China/India/Vietnam etc. Does that still qualify as American made? To some people it would, but not to others.
The term "American made" isn't something (to my knowledge) that is regulated. So I could buy model car kits from Sri Lanka cheaply, assemble them here and sort of deceive my customers.
Not saying the stores you mentioned do that, but it does happen. Sad, when the customers are trying to do something good.

Re: Did we know Uggs were made in CHINA?
whoa...
why are people throwing the name of my beloved borough around like this
lolita, you should ask in these shops where they buy their materials. a "ex" friend of mine was making cards, pillows, dresses, chotchkas...and she sewed them here...but not before she went to Thailand, India, and Syria to buy all of her materials dirt cheap.
she was making money off the little man just as much as the corporations...she charged a hefty price for her "hand made" or "locally made" items after getting the material for peanuts...AND she didn't pay rent on a factory/studio.
I'd rather give my $$ to some poor guy in china trying to feed his family than someone who'll charge me $100 for a pillow, then go out and buy Manolo's with my money.

eta: she doesnt charge $100 a pillow either. she doesnt rape people for their money, like some other shops like Red Pearl does. she too is poor and just tryingt o feed her family. id rather support people like her than some child labor overseas.

no one should be "offended" by this. it's a WORLD economy. those that can afford to purchase "locally" will. there is nothing wrong with buying American and also buying chinese, korean, italian, french
what's the saying...think globally, act locally.
I see nothing wrong with thinking and acting in the same vein.
I see all these "boutiques" in my neighborhood (it's been INVADED by them, much to my dismay) and I can't for my life understand why and American thinks they deserve to be paid 20 times the amount someone in another country should be.
it's too ethnocentric...too snobbish for my taste.
no, your cotton blouse is NOT worth $100...I don't care if you sewed it with golden thread...get over yourself, little designer
ETA: you seem to be taking this as a personal attack to your friend and her livelihood, which it isn't and shouldn't be at all. where is her shop? perhaps I'll go and check it out.

No, I was never trying to say anybody was lying.
What I was trying to say was that it's nearly impossible for the average consumer to buy all American Made products no matter where they live! Not only are American Made products hard to find, they tend to be very expensive. Plain and simple, labor is just too darn expensive in this country.
Where are your linens manufactured? Dinnerware? Flatware? What about your undergarments? Socks? Denim? Your pillows? Blankets? Your electronics/appliances? DVDs/CDs? Brushes/Combs?
Is that all made in America as well?

She can't be too poor if she can still keep her boutique open.
BTW, how long has it been open?
And not every factory in China, India, Vietnam, etc. employees children.
