Did you have pen pals when you were younger?

I always used to love writing letters and I always had lots of pen-pals in the late 70's and 80's in France, England, Japan etc....

So did you have any pen-pals? Remember the absolute joy of getting letters in the real post? With foreign handwriting and stamps and everything.

Ah memory lane.

I had one from Texas (close enough to a foreign country ) and LOVED hearing from her. We wrote every week for a couple of years.

In HS French we had to have one in France, but the language barrier was too much!

YES! I had three.

I got 2 of my pen-pals from TEEN magazine. One lived in New Jersey and the other was from Tacoma, Washington. I LOVED getting letters from them! I remember the NJ girl had big hair and always talked about YO... MTV RAPS.

My other pen-pal was from France. I got her through my 7th grade French class. She was a LOT older than me though... I was 12 and she was 16. We didn't keep in touch.

I think I became pen pals with both of them from having our names PRINTED IN MAGAZINES!!!!!

none that really stuck. The only one I remember is from West Chester, PA ... we met at a hotel in the Catskills when I was 9 or 10 and exchanged about 5 letters. Nothing too important. She was boring!

Oh yes!! I remember requesting one from Ireland or England but...

My first one was named Robyn and she was from New Zealand. My second one was Annabelle (?) and she was from Wales. Her address was Teapot Cottage! She and I would mail each other pictures from the teen idol magazines and I remember being absolutely in love with Paul Young back then Britpop lite! Oh, and of course Duran Duran!!!!

I had one... We were writing back & forth for about a year. Her name was Christelle & she was a mormon (sp??)from Idaho. We never kept in touch after that. From what I remember, she lived on a farm, and couldn't locate NY on a map!

OMG PIMP.....I wrote into Tiger beat in the early 80's and found this pen pla from NJ. She later moved to FL. We wrote for YEARSSSSSS and finally met in 2002. We visit each other every other year. She is visiting me in Sept and we're going to see NKOTB together.



She is like family now...

In 4th grade we this "project" where we would participate in a Pen Pal drawing. We dontate $1.00 and then we were given a name and address of a person who would be our penpal for the year.
Long story short, here I am at 31 years old and to this day my penpal and I STILL keep in contact (via email now) and we send Birthday card/gifts, Christmas cards etc. She's from Japan! We have never met though. She was in NY 2 years ago but I was out of town when she came to NY

I think its so awesome though that we still keep in touch!

yep but no international ones. I do penpals with my 2nd grade class every year and they absolutely love it!!!!!!!!!!

YES---I loved having pen pals and buying cool stationery. I loved to write. There was one that I was in touch with from about 5th grade until I was in college. It started out as something that my girl scout troup did and we got assigned a pen pal from another group in the Albany area. I am very curious about her because we were in touch for so long.

I had a few, the one I stayed in contact with the longest though was from Canada. She's actually my Facebook friend now, so we send letters that way!

Yep! Ulla from Germany. We are still in touch (via email now) I think this started in the 6th grade?? She sent me part of the Berlin Wall. We sent each other currency and magazine articles. We used to write nice long letters to each other for years. What we talked about i have no clue!

I also had another one for a short time from Singapore.

I had a friend from Sweden who worked with me at the local horse farm. When he moved back, we started writing to each other and I have kept in touch with him by snail mail and e-mail since 1990. I haven't seen him since then but I just found him on Facebook so I am happy.

DH and I both have friends in Sweden so maybe we will go and visit...

Actually she found me online when we were in college and emailed me. I should see if I can find her again to see how she is doing...

I used to have 2 pen pals but they were both lame, one only wrote about herself and the other only wrote about 3 sentences...i wish I had cool pen pals!!

Yes, I had one from New Zealand! I don't know if many kids have them any more since My Space and Facebook are so popular. When I taught second grade we had pen pals from California and my students would get excited to read their letters and it made writing more of an authentic experience for them.
