Tried a Disney travel agent but wound up getting the best deal directly through Disney.

If you like planning everything yourself, like me, then don't use a travel agent.
It's not hard and could be satisfying knowing you've got the best deals on your own. All you really need is to do some research on a website like mousesavers.com and find the info you need to book your hotel, airline and purchase your tickets.
I think the regulars on this site who have been to Disney before are also very helpful. :)
But if you feel you need advice about where to stay, what dining options to get, etc. then a travel agent who specialize in Disney vacations can offer great advice. The only thing is, you do feel obligated to book through them even if they don't give you the best rates 'cus they've done so much research for you.

To the above, a Disney TA should always be getting you the best rates. There's no discount code or offer through Disney that a TA can't get, and they ideally should be checking multiple discounts to make sure you're getting the best possible. It's important to work with a Disney specialist, and I would think a Disney Specialist from a Disney-focused agency. I've heard about some people who are the Disney Specialist at a Liberty Travel or a AAA and they just decided to specialize in that, they're not making it their whole focus, or they're not the kind of experts you'd find with a Disney-focused agency.
