Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

We recently moved back to the city and I am looking for an obgyn.

I don't know if I should pick a practice that rotates doctors where one doctor is on call per day (less likely to cancel appts but won't necessarily know who will deliver me) or if I should go with a primary obgyn.

What kind of practice did you go to? Did your primary obgyn deliver you?

Any recommendations for an obgyn would be appreciated. Apt is in the east 70's and I work in the east 40's so anything between would be ideal.

Re: Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

I go to a practice that has 3 women doctors and 1 woman midwife.

I saw all the doctors in the practice during both my pregnancies. I do consider one of the doctors my primary OB/GYN because she is the one I go to for my annual checks.

She did not deliver either of my kids!

One of the other women doctors delivered my DS and the midwife delivered my DD.

I had a wonderful experience with both of them. IMO, I am happy I was at a practice with several doctors where I got to know each of them during my pregnancies so it really didn't matter to me who delivered.

there are 3 OBs in my practice. at my practice, you have to agree to see all three, so, any of the three could deliver you.

for the first 2/3 of my pregnancy, I saw one of the three. towards the end, i began seeing the other two. I was nervous, i wanted the first one to deliver DS since I "knew" him best but one of the other's ended up delivering DS via csection and he was amazing. Im GLAD he was the one to deliver DS.

If you go with a practice that has more than one OB, just make sure you get to know them all Chat Icon

ETA - it was funny to see them all at the hospital. they would rotate days so even though 2 of the 3 didnt deliver DS, they all still came to check in on me Chat Icon

I went to StonyBrook University Associates.
My regular doc who I almost never saw at the end anyway was not on call so she did not deliver.
I think the guys name that delivered was Burke. But he was only there for like the last 5 minutes... he pretty much caught the baby then these other 2 stitched me up. Don't know who they were either but I really didn't care.
The nurse (and me!) did all the work.

I went to a practice with about 5 Drs. When you are PG, they purposely rotate the OBs you see for your appts so you are familiar with all of them when you are actually in labor and only one of them is on call. I was lucky in the sense that I loved all of them, so I wouldve been fine with whomever was on call.

I go to a practice (3 docs- but only 2 do deliveries). In both pregnancies, they make sure you see both docs. They cover call at the hospital with 2 other docs from another practice. I've met all 4 of them before and by chance, my main ob/gyn delivered DD and his partner delivered DS. I would have been comfortable with any of them delivering. As for cancellations, I've only been re-scheduled twice in the past 3 years.

I go to a practice with 2 and I see Dr Cohen as my main OB. Met with the 2nd Dr a few times and then some time in my 3rd tri I heard he's no longer delivering.

My OB was on call when I went in to be induced and worked out he delivered DS. If it was another day someone else would've

Re: Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

I go to a practice with 3 Dr's that deliver. I met with all 3 of them at some point in my pregnancy. I wanted my primary OB to deliver and hoped that the 1 Dr that I felt was a bit abrupt wouldn't deliver my daughter. As luck would have it, he did...however in the end he wound up being perfect!

Re: Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

I had a brilliant OB. She's in a practice with a younger OB (her daughter, but she doesn't want people to know its her daughter Chat Icon) They are both exceptional, FM me if your interested, they have offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and I know they make it a point to deliver their own patients.

She was my primary OB, not only did she deliver, she was in and out of my room for the entire 20 hours I was in labor. She rushed to me after she finished work, was with me before she went to work, and during her breaks and what not.

After delivery she came to do my checkup, and visited me a second time. She was on the phone with me when she wasn't there. Her actual bedside manner isn't too pleasant, she can rub the wrong way KWIM? but if you blow off the attitude, she went above and beyond what was required of her to take care of me.

FM me for her info!

My practice has 2 OB's. Whoever is on call when you go into labor is who delivers.

I had a c-section for my first and will have a repeat for my 2nd, so in that case, I chose to do both with the primary OB.

I responded with my rec on the pregnancy board. My primary OB delivered DS but there's a good chance she won't this time because she's due a week after me. I like all of the doctors in the practice though I'm not concerned.

I delivered both girls at Columbia Presbyterian - long story - they thought DD#1 might need surgery at birth so it was advised that I switch - I had a good experience so I stayed with them for DD#2.

I went to a group in the Columbia Presbyterian medical building between 5th and Madison on 60th. I liked it b.c they do all their testing IN the building - either in the actual OB office or your glucose test one floor down. The sonos are all done by the Maternal fetal doctors in the same office. Then there are 2 groups. One regular OB group and one maternal fetal group (if you become high risk OR need to see a HR OB you can either switch to that group b.c they deliver OR continue with your OB and see them as well). But they are in the same office so it works out nicely.

They have one OB at the hospital on 24 hour shifts so if you have an issue OR you go into labor when you go to the hospital there is always an OB in your group that you will see - I never saw a resident.

You do see your OB all the way thru and they claim that they deliver about 80-85% of their own patients b.c it just works out that way - but they have meet and greets at the hospital - where they invite moms and dads to the hospital and they offer some snacks and they all get up and they introduce themselves to everyone and they do a q&a - then you get time to meet them individually after the presentation and they offer Labor & delivery tours.

I had 2 csections but they were not pushed on me - they were for medical reasons - but if this is important to you - they were willing to discuss VBAC IF I was a good candidate and was interested - but I wasn't.

Re: Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

I go to a practice with 5 delivering OBGYNs, and they make you see all 5 during your pregnancy so that you at least know the one who delivers you. I did have one who I considered my primary bc I always saw her previously for my yearly exams. she did not deliver DD, but I now LOVE the dr. who did. I think he will be my primary from now on.
I prefer it this way, bc if there is only one dr and he/she is not on call when you deliver, you will get someone who you probably never met before. I'm in queens, so sorry, I can't recommend my dr.

Re: Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

I went to a practice with 3 doctors. Of course, the only doctor I have never seen is the one who ended up on call the day my son was born. I didn't like him as much as I liked the other 2, and going into it I was disappointed that my favorite one wouldn't be delivering. But honestly, during the process I didn't really care. The doctor is barely involved until the pushing part anyway. So it's mainly your nurse up until then (who I LOVED). And once you're pushing, you don't give a rat's behind who is standing between your legs!

Re: Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

I went to a practice that had 2 dr's in it, and then theres a dr there who doesnt deliver..just does the checkups. I was seeing primarily the woman OB and she was going to deliver me, until she up and left when i was 36 wks to start her own practice.

I had seen the other dr. there for a few appts so it worked out fine that he wound up delivering me. although, he was the only dr. there delivering anyway b/c the other one left.

I guess if you just had a primary OB this wouldnt be an issue.

Same with my practice.

I really liked the Dr. I saw the most during the rotation (not my dr technically). She was the one who delivered DS as well.

I go to a practice with four doctors. I saw them all throughout my pregnancy. My primary doctor did deliver my babies, but that was coincidence.

Yes, and No.
My practice is my Dr. and that's it. He has someone to cover for him for the 2 weeks a year he goes on vaca - but that's it.

I delivered DS at Cornell on 68th and York. My ob/gyn delivered him, I have been going to Cornell Medical Associates (on 80th and 3rd) for years now. Love them. You don't rotate drs (unless you want to) but if you go into labor naturally any of them can deliver you. They all still have scheduled hospital rounds days so they don't get "called out" so if you have an appt with your dr it will never be cancelled because of another patients labor. They are an excellent practice (both east and west side offices) and they also have internal medicine and pediatrics. DS's ped is there as is our PCP. My OB was Dr. Waterstone. Loved her. I also saw Dr. Weiss when I first started going there but she stopped delivering but is still an in office OB and will see you throughout your pregnancy if you like her. They are all OB and GYN there. They're an extremelly well regarded, busy practice you never wait for your appt, when it's scheduled, you're in.

Re: Did your primary obgyn deliver your DC? Did the practice rotate doctors?

My doctor's office has 4 doctors, and before you're ready to deliver, they like you to meet all of them because any of them could really deliver the baby, unless it's a scheduled C-section.
When I went into labor, my regular doctor was not on call....but by the time I delivered, he was, so he was able to deliver my baby. Chat Icon

After meeting all of the doctors, I felt comfortable with them, and would have been fine with any of them doing the delivery.
