Did Zantac not work for reflux but something else did? and is it reflux?!?!

sorry this is long..but hopefully the more details i give the more i can fig out the problem... (thank you for any responses)

so we didn't do anything until now...I have wanted to do something for 2-3 mo now but my DH was hoping she would grow out of it like the ped said might happen ...BUT her VERY excessive spitting up has gotten worse and worse

My DD is 4.5 mo old
We are about a week in on giving her Zantac (generic brand) We give it two times a day...

We are assuming it is reflux but it seems like the excessive spitting up is the only symptom. There is no excessive crying, arching back, gassiness, hives, blood in stool, etc.

Her stool goes back and forth between the "perfect yellow seedy color" to a light green which i am told it is normal as long as it goes back (i know all about the formilk/hindmilk issues...but i dont think it is that...bec it does always go back to yellow - although i have a feeling since she is a snacker this could be the problem with that..but i am not too worried about that)

It is at times projectile and could be 10-15 times between feeding... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and sometimes during a feeding (then I am a mess)

Tonight - She just spit up 3 times in a row 5 secs apart it was sooo much that i was drenched on my shirt, bra, pants and even my underwear along with her shirt pants, undershirt and even her diaper Chat Icon Chat Icon ...BUT she NEVER cries - it is like she doesnt even realize it is happening which is probably a good thing

She wants to eat often and falls asleep during feedings so she is my snacker and eats every two hrs at least...

is it possible she is JUST eating too much..but i thought they say you cannot overfeed an infant Chat Icon Chat Icon

she came home from the hospital 6 lbs and has gained 1 lb every month - she is now 10 lbs 15 oz - the dr doesnt seem concern about her weight gain..

the dr said we can also try the cereal in the bottle but i don't think i want to do that - i swear that is just an old wives tales and hasn't really been proven

is there something that works better than zantac? does she even have reflux?

any helpful hint, tip, advice really appreciated!

thanks =) you think by the 3rd kid i would have this down...i thought my DS had it bad but zantac worked for him!!! this is def worse

4 1/2 months old and eating every 2 hours tells me that something is wrong. Not wrong, but that she should definitely be going much longer than 2 hours. My son is 3 months old and eats every 3-4 hours. He also has reflux. Your daughter snacking is definitely something that points to reflux. The slow weight gain is another thing that points to reflux. My son is 3 months and 10 lbs 12 ounces (this was 2 weeks ago).

Zantac worked for my 1st son, but it didn't work for my 2nd son. He's on prilosec twice a day. It has helped a lot and even though the medicine isn't supposed to reduce his spit up... the prilosec reduces his spit up a lot.

But the good thing is that her spitting up isn't hurting her it appears.

I would definitely try the rice cereal to help keep it down.

my question is... if it's not hurting her, why give her meds?

thank you for your response..

just bec the spit up/vomit is SOOO much..i would like it to be less...i feel like a lot of her feedings are coming right back up and she is not keeping a lot of it down and therefore is hungrier quicker...(my theory anyway)

well typically they say the meds don't help reduce the spit up. However for my son, it did help.

with my 1st son, zantac worked within 24 hours.

zantac only helps against 1 acid, but there are 3 in the stomach. She might need something stronger like prevacid or prilosec. I would suggest taking her to a GI specialist and maybe try one of those. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Hang in there!!!!!

You can try a formula for spit up like enfamil ar. It thickens in their belly so it helps it to stay down.
Thickening with rice cereal is an out dated practice and changes the nutrient profile to 35cal/oz instead of the 20cal/oz.

THe meds usually help deal with the pain from the regurgitation and the burning on the esophagus

Zantac didnt help. We are on prevacid and cereal in bottle as well- they both help a great deal!

Zantac didn't help, Axid helped a little, but the one thing that did help was the oatmeal in her bottles. My dd's symptoms were excessive spitting up, arching and slow weight gain. At nearly 8 months she is just about 16 lbs.

Zantac and prevacid didn't work for us either. We did the cereal in the formula and food and I believe it was Maalox( or Mylanta- It was OTC and started with an M) but we only did that very rarely. We just thickened everything!

Even if you BF you could offer a few spoonfuls of Oatmeal Cereal mixed with BM.
