Dirty Dancing Remake?? Thoughts!
Let the guessing games begin.
The news of a "Dirty Dancing" remake, to be directed by Kenny Ortega ("Michael Jackson's This is It"), was followed almost immediately by speculation about who would fill the shoes of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, the stars of the iconic 1987 original.
No casting announcements have yet been made, though several names are already being tossed around by gossip websites. They range from Zac Efron, whom Ortega directed in three "High School Musical" films, to "Twilight" hunk Taylor Lautner, a famously muscular actor with martial-arts training. Other nominees include Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl") and the rock singer Joe Jonas.
Less attention seems focused on Grey's role, though some obvious names might include Vanessa Hudgens, Aimee Teegarden (Disney's "Prom") and Alyson Stoner (the "Step Up" films).
Ortega, 61, choreographed the original "Dirty Dancing," which starred Grey as Frances "Baby" Houseman, a high-school graduate visiting a Catskills resort, and Swayze as Johnny Castle, a dance instructor. The low-budget film became not only a surprise hit but a cultural landmark, thanks to Swayze's sexuality and an overheated script filled with now-classic lines such as "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!" The soaring theme song, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," won an Oscar and Golden Globe.
The film's enduring appeal was proved just last month by "Crazy, Stupid, Love," a romantic comedy with Ryan Gosling as a hunky pickup artist and Emma Stone as his latest mark. His surefire tactic: re-enacting the climactic "Dirty Dancing" scene in which Swayze hoisted Grey into the air. Gosling also tried it with Al Roker on NBC's "Today."
My thoughts are: LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!!!!
Its a classic movie and one of my favorites. Stop trying to remake all of the old movies and let them be.

I don't think people who enjoyed the original (our age group) will like it or really be into it. There's only 1 dirty dancing for us. Whether the new generation will like it, I really don't know. maybe....
to me, it's like 90210. I loved the original series. will still watch repeats. but have no interest in the new 90210. i don't even know if it's still on.

Same here. It's such an iconic movie BECAUSE of the original actors. I will watch it if they make it only to critique it.

Lots of movies from the 80's have been remade...Fame, Karate Kid, Hairspray, Freaky Friday, Footloose is in the works. I am sure with contemporary stars, music & dance this will be a popular film. The people around for the originals are not the target audience for the remakes.
The part that bothers me is the lack of creativity to come up with new & interesting movies.

I agree with the PP that those of us that LOVE it will not like it, but a younger generation may like it. My concern, though, is that it's not very "racey" for this new generation ya'know. Part of the charm was understanding how different the era was and how when we were growing up it was pretty sexy. I'm not for it and I don't think the new gen will like it. I also feel like they need to leave classics alone.

I absolutey HATE the idea of this. It's one of my all time favorite movies and to think of someone like Zac Efron replacing Patrick Swayze is madness to me

Honestly this is not something that can be redone like Footloose or something. This is different. Swayze and Gray MADE the movie.

Exactly. Do any of us know or care how 20-, 30- and 40-somethings liked the original back in the 80's? Probably not. Just like kids today won't care about what we think about the remake. 
I'll watch it if Taylor Lautner and Alyson Stoner are cast. I like both of them and have a general rule that I must watch ALL dance movies ever made.

You don't mess with perfection. These are iconic roles MADE by the original actors.
Besides, the only "remake" ever allowed is this one:

Would it be set in the same time period? Brought up to 2011/2012?
So much of the appeal (apart from the cast) was that it was nostalgic for a time that had already (by the 80s, when it was released) passed.
