Disney cruise opinions please

DD is 1 & a half & is a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse addict but we don't really want to take her to disney yet so we thought a disney cruise might be fun.

If you have gone, would you recommend it?

If anyone has any other family vacation ideas I'd like to hear them also, we're open to going anywhere that won't break the bank.

We're looking to go in March or end of June.

Disney cruise opinions please

I just went on a Disney Cruise last month. My parents were the ones who wanted to take her - I thought she was too young (18 months at the time). I think the longer you wait the better, but there won't be too much of a difference from March to June. 3 is the age where they can participate in the activities, so there won't be anything for her to do. The cruise we went on was only 3 nights, so we were plenty busy, but a 7 day cruise we probably would have been bored with her not being able to do any activities. The ship made two stops - one in Nassau, which was not really our kind of place, so we hung out on the ship most of the day and hung by the pool. The pool is pretty small on the ship, and they are too young for the water slide, but there is an awesome splash zone perfect for a 2 year old (Nemos Reef). Day 2 was on their private island, which was so nice. They provided lunch and soft drinks, and they rented and sold rafts and toys, and everything was actually reasonably priced. We had a great day there.

The shows at night were awesome - DD LOVED them. They were the best part.

They constantly have characters around the ship, and it is so organized - they take professional pics for you, and will take one with your camera.

The ship itself was beautiful, and the rooms were really nice too. The food was not so great, but we didn't really care too much about it.

DD loves Disney Junior and liked MMC before the cruise, but she came home beyond obsessed with Mickey. She must have a Mickey with her at all times now. She wakes up in the morning and the first thing she says is "Mickey." I walk in from work at night and she runs to me and says "Mickey!" She has Mickey radar and spots him everywhere. Be warned!

I have all my pics on Shutterfly, so if you care to look through my terrible pictures I am happy to share the album with you!

Re: Disney cruise opinions please

I have a 18m DD also, & have been trying to plan a vacation for the longest. Im so confused as what to do, my DH is dying to go on another cruise, but I keep telling him what are we going to do when she goes to bed 8:30/9, sit in the room and stare at each other?lol I would love to do a Disney cruise but like PP said I think it would be better to wait until around 3.

Would love to hear others opinions, especially what you did at night when LO went to sleep. Is it better to go to a resort type of a place & having the option of sitting on the balcony & having a few drinks? Thanks :)

Re: Disney cruise opinions please

If your DC is not a runner, then I think it would be fine and a lot of fun. But I would not expect her to remember it. I think she will enjoy it in the moment. We took DS to Disney World when he was 11 months old. He loved it. It was a perfect trip. We took a cruise when DD was 8 months and again when she was about 1 1/2. We had family with us so it was much easier. I will be honest - I would not take a cruise with an 18 month old that likes to run unless you had a lot of adults who can help. I would wait for a Disney Cruise until your DC is 3. This way she can really enjoy it. For what you are spending - and it is substantially more than most other cruise lines, I would want my kids to really love it.

My DD doesn't go to sleep early - she stayed up until about 11-11:30 every night on the cruise. But we had a room with a balcony, so you can get one of those if you want to sit out and have a few drinks (I would have if I wasn't pregnant!).

They also have child care that is very inexpensive, but I knew DD would hate to be left there. The nursery was really nice though.

Re: Disney cruise opinions please

Thanks so much! Very helpful! I might try to find another kid friendly vacation & save the cruise until she can participate in the activities. Unless I found a really good deal on the disney cruise, it doesn't seem worth it since I'll be running after her the whole time!

Don't get me wrong - there will be plenty for DD to do, but she won't be able to participate in the unsupervised activities until 3. I did not feel like I was running after her the whole time at all, but my DD is also not the type to run around and she listens very well.

The ship is very kid friendly of course, so it makes traveling with a baby easy. They have a program that they will deliver diapers and wipes (brand of your choosing) so you don't have to travel with them, and it isn't crazy expensive. At dinner they have coloring books and crayons with the kids menus, so that keeps them busy. And they bring their food with child size utensils.

I am sure your DD would LOVE it - just wanted to warn you that she is too young to participate in the kids activities.

Re: Disney cruise opinions please

I took a regular cruise & DS loved it. Got a balcony room and napped DS in the stroller. We got to enjoy the evenings and he never woke up (shows, comedy clubs, etc.). We loved it so much, we are going again in the Spring with 2 kids.

IMO, the Disney cruises cost SIGNIFICANTLY more just to see Mickey walking around at such a young age (as everyone said, you can't leave your DC at such an early age).

That being said, we are going to go to Disney on our next cruise (for a half day excursion). To me, that is the best of both worlds. DS gets to see Mickey, we get to test drive Disney for half a day, we do beaches for 2 other days and get to spend SO much less $$ on a cruise. Also, no flying.

Re: Disney cruise opinions please

We just took our kids on their first Disney cruise this past summer. DD was 5 and DS was 15 months. It was a 5 day cruise and DS had plenty to do.

Day 1 stayed on the ship so we hit the pool. Although he couldn't go in the pool, he had a great time at the splash area. It is enclosed so even if DC is a runner they won't get far. Every night he went to the Nursery to play then sleep. You could also go to the Oceaneers club open houses for more play time. Of course there were many meet and greets. They also had many organized activities for the little one. On the sea day we went to the Disney Jr dance party with Pluto. On the Castaway Cay day we spent the whole day on the island. We did some time at the beach and some in the splash area. Don't forget meals too. DS went to dinner with us each night. He loved Animators Palate with all the Nemo characters.

Ultimately, you'll do whats best for your family. It is expensive, but they do go above and beyond to ensure that every member of the family ges a good vacation. But, I wanted to share my experience so you could see that there is plenty for the little ones to do on the cruise.

If you are planning in one for this March, check their website as some of the cruises the kids sail free out of Galveston, TX and Miami, depending!

Re: Disney cruise opinions please

We went last year when DD1 was 4 and DD2 was 2. We had a blast and are going on the Fantasy this year. Kids must be 3+ and potty trained to go to the oceaneer club. you could pay for babysitting. we didn't use either. we may this year when the girls are 3 and 5 and can go together to the club.

there are TONS of things to do. no other cruise line offers as much for kids. the food was fabulous too. on the magic, i wish the non kid entertainment was better, but that was fine. the service was so wonderful!

i guess it couldn't be bad b/c we have 12 people going this year and only 2 of them are not teens or adults.

Did you find that Wonder was dated? I know it was built in 1998.

We are trying to decide between a cruise or a Caribbean resort.

Both carnival and Norwegian do this. We are taking norwegian out of NYC. Booking one of the best suites for a whole lot less $ than Disney cruises cost. Don't get me wrong, we will do a Disney cruise... But when kids are 4 and 5.

Re: Disney cruise opinions please

The magic was a bit dated but not as much as I would expect for a ship that was built that long ago. however, there are many DCL aficionados that greatly prefer the magic/wonder. yes, there is a price you pay for Disney and discount and DIsney are not used together in a sentence. But, they go above and beyond. My mother and our cousin have been on 11 cruises with many different cruise lines. The said easily that DCL had the best service and some of the best food. The rooms are also notably larger. Other kids clubs don't stay open for the same number of hours or have the same level of activities. I think DCL is best for kids 3+, IMO. We very seriously considered Allure of the Seas for this year's cruise. After a very detailed review of trip reports, I didn't think it had enough to offer my young girls without making them wait all the time.

Will my 2yo be able to participate in non-supervised activities? I know there is babysitting available, which we are not looking for. I want to know that there will be areas where my 2yo can play with my 4yo.

Thanks for the feedback. We will wait until the younger one is 3.

Are all cruise (non-Disney) ships similar in that a 2yo cannot participate?

There are TONS of things for a 2 and 4 year old to do together, with you with them! There are open play times at the kids clubs, splash areas, movies, deck parties, special family activies, etc. You can look up past Navigators (daily itineraries) online. From what I have found, other cruise lines don't offer this (I read itineraries, trip reports, and cruise reviews). The kids clubs have far more limited hours than Disney (who are open from early morning until late at night, will feed them dinner, and put them to bed in the club until you come....for kids over 3 or babysitting for a fee). The Wonder would feel a bit dated if you are used to the newest and the fanciest ships out there. However, the Magic and Wonder have a nice charm to them, with a personal feel. So many people prefer them for that reason. Check out the DCL board on the DIS Boards. Tons of great info.

I don't understand why they won't allow 2 year olds in pools with swim diapers!

Your 2YO will be able to be dropped off in the nursery not the club. The nursery is like daycare. They play, have activities and snacks. Sometimes characters drop by for a visit.

yes, they are strict about the swim diapers, but they really don't do much to hold stuff in. It isn't easy to clean out a pool on a ship in the middle of the ocean. also, DCL pools aren't salt water, they are fresh water, unlike some other cruise lines. They have sprinkler splash zones on each ship for the little ones.

My DD went into the pool with swim diapers. There was no one there telling us not to.

We are back to leaning towards the Disney cruise. I'm going to do some pricing and book soon.

How are the rooms?

I'm guessing the tv will have Disney shows/movies?
