I noticed that this year when the 2013 packages came out that they NOW say that the dining plan CAN save you 15% on meals - whereas in 2012 packages the dining plan said it could save you 20%.

Free Dining for fall/winter 2012 was announced at 7am this morning and resorts and dates were already sold out by 8am. Don't wait for this one!

For us it was worth it, because we did 5 character meals on a 6 night trip. We also took fruit and applesauce for our desserts to be used as snacks. Since we were staying on property, we also bought one of those refillable mugs the first day and then would get bottled drinks as part of the meal plan to bring with us to the park or the pool later on.

Free dining is often a good deal depending on who you have in your party you will often get more $ off that way than with the room only discount. So it is best to price both out. If you have say 2 adults and 2 children under 9 in 2013 for example the dining plan would cost about $144 a night multiply that by however many nights vs 5-30% off the room only rate depending on the hotel. Most people come out ahead with the free meals even if you don't spend $144a day on food. But it pays to price it all out. Dining at WDW is expensive.

You do, and we'll be switching some people to room discounts when/if they come out AND if they're a better deal.
Today I saved clients anywhere from $158.45 to $1,404.88 on a single room by adding the FREE DINING promotion to their current reservations -- that's a lot of Mickey bars!

Not if you're staying on your points. If you are booking a cash reservation you can. As a DVC member, however, you are not subject to the peak surcharges for the dining plan. You are also eligible to buy the Tables in Wonderland card for $100 a year.

I am one to tell you no but it depends what you like to do.
We are not sitting down for 2 hours with served meals for lunch and dinner type of people.
So we did not do a dinner plan and absolutely did not miss it.
We went on a budget.
Mostly, I don't know what I want to eat tomorrow night so I certainly don't know what I will want to eat in 3-6 months.
DS was also just under 3 yo and I did not want our entire day or whatever current activity we were doing for a dinner we had to be at by a certain in a certain area of the park.
I got a lot of snacks/soda, etc... delivered to our hotel room by the gardengrocers.com (the equivalent of peapod).
I was perfectly find eating a chicken salad for lunch.
Again, depends on what you want and your lifestyle.
We did 1 dinner for 1 night and went at 5:30pm. Early birds and we only waited 30 minutes. There was no way I would have done a restaurant lunch and dinner with a toddler.

The regular dining plan is only one restaurant meal not 2. You would do one TS meal and one counter service meal. But yes it can be a pain if you don't want one sit down a day.

Right now Cinderella's royal table is the only 2TS character meal. All the others are 1 TS. But I agree with Jennifer. They run upper $30's and $40s for adults but several cost more than the children's dining plan costs. So if you plan to do several it can definitely be in your favor to book the basic dining plan.
Maybe you are thinking of the dinner shows or mickey's backyard BBQ. That is 2TS credits but more like a dinner show than a character meals bc the characters don't go to all the tables.
