I think that the concern in closing schools is that once they close, they are done. It isn't just going to be for a week. Because not much will change in a week. In fact it may get worse. So it will linger on and on because no one will be able to figure out when it is safe to reopen. Everyone will be waiting for zero cases again. And then we will have a situation where kids have lost another 3-4 months of education, sports, and socialization. And oh yes - they will also have to admit the magical vaccine did not cure the pandemic.
I don't know what the answer is. My kids said today there were tons of students and teachers out. I don't know how staffing is even working. I don't want schools to close. But at this point I am so incredibly defeated and mentally and emotionally exhausted that part of me doesn't give a flying fig anymore. It is completely draining just to get through each day lately. Whatever happens happens. I'm out.
Honestly it's going to get to the point where life isn't worth living anymore. So I'll just take my chances and if I'm meant to die of Covid, it's fate. I honestly just don't give a fuk anymore either. So sick of it. Whatever. My child was locked out of her school today for half a lunch period in the freezing cold so they could socially distance in the cafeteria. Half of them had no coats. They were locked outside like animals. Actually animals are treated better. You'd report your neighbors for leaving a dog outside in this cold. And these are the people in charge of our children's education. I am in the process of finding an attorney. And reporting them to the state for abuse. So I have literally zero my fuks to give about this new head cold. I don't care to hear the bullshitt about numbers or testing. I don't care even a little anymore . They are sending home tests and I'll toss them in the trash. That's the point I'm at. I'm so angry I can't even describe it.
It is so disgusting how these children are treated. My kids no longer enjoy school. I ask them how their day was and all I get is a run down of who yelled at them for moving their desk of a stupid x when they got up, who threatened them because their mask fell down a little, how they got yelled at during lunch because they walked across the room the wrong way to get a napkin, they cried during school and their teacher didn’t care (this is obviously wasn’t true bc the teacher emailed me ASAP but a child doesn’t understand why their teacher doesn’t come up a kneel next to them and comfort them like they used to), they need a heavier coat because the classroom is freezing bc windows are open, they were outside while it was snowing because it’s “safer”, I could go on and on. Tell your college aged kids to go into psychology because the kids in NY are going to be mental cases.

Totally agree and with everything they have been doing for the past year the numbers are still climbing. Time to realize just let them be!!!

I agree. It won’t be two weeks - at least a month. It will either continue to spike because people are still gathering or it will delay the inevitable spike.
Kids need to be in school. People were freaking out today in a nearby district because 200 staff and students in that district tested positive over break. They were up in arms that they sent their kids not knowing this. Those 200 individuals were likely not there unless they got their positives before Christmas. And those 200 individuals likely didn’t get Covid at school.
My kids were hybrid or full remote last year for 3/4 of the year and it was exhausting and trying… We need to try to keep schools open as long as staffing allows.
If our kids can go to Chuck E Cheese or Kalahari - they deserve to be in school.
ETA - none of this is good for a persons mental state. And I really dislike the people who say kids are resilient as now are the two year mark, it definitely has had a huge impact on their lives. Especially since last May/June we celebrated the end of the pandemic… and here we are…
I agree. The answer is not closing schools. As usual they are not reporting on the numbers that would let people make an educated decision. What we really need to know (for school purposes) is how many students/staff contracted Covid at school. That number, at least where I am, is extremely small. The majority of students they quarantine never get sick. That is what they need to be telling people. It does not matter if 1000 people in a district get Covid. That is because of what they are doing outside of school not during the school day. Social distancing and masks are enough to keep the kids safe in school as it has been shown for the last year and a half. If schools ever shut down again they might as well just have them repeat the year because they will be learning nothing and that is criminal.
Exactly!
Our principal - when the cases started to rise - said that this isn’t spreading in schools because the cases are completely random (they weren’t random if you look at who hangs out after school but from a school perspective there was no connection).
Last year one of the principal said there may have been one incidence of in school spread but it was amongst staff.
Although it was nice not having our kids sick - we can’t hide them from germs forever!
They are even starting to admit that the rise in hospitalized children related to Covid isn’t all kids who were admitted for Covid. It’s kids testing positive who are in there for other reasons too…

That is horrible. I saw the post on one of the mom pages about how they will be keeping windows open so bundle your kids up. Many are like, well the cold doesn't get you sick so this is a good thing. ANYTHING can get you sick if your immune system is low. I don't CARE what a local mom says or a hundred scientists. If my immune system is low and it is hot or cold, I am getting sick if others are sick also. Don't people even KNOW their own bodies by the time they are an adult? People are just getting so stupid and I get the circulation thing, I honestly do as when you don't clean the filters out at work, it has always been that more people get sick. Yes, experience is what I have which you would think these 30.40 and 50 year old people would have by now. I honestly can not concentrate when I am cold and it is torture to me so I can't imagine a child having to wear a winter coat and be freezing trying to learn. Get better circulation systems. We pay enough taxes and the teachers get paid enough so how about cutting salaries like in other states and taking care of the students.

I'd like whatever moron forced my child outside yesterday to go outside today and stand there for half an hour with no coat on. They weren't even letting kids get their jackets from lockers. How about they try it?

That's iinsane - we don't go out if it's below 32 so DS went back to his homeroom and played Jenga during recess.

I can't even tell you how furious I am. I wrote to the principal- no answer I wrote to the superintendent- no answer Others who's children were subjected to this wrote to the BOE members. I will be making calls today and threatening legal action. They think they can do whatever the hell they want and there will be no consequences

I honestly want to walk up there myself as this has made ME so mad.
I bet if you put it on one of the mom pages or the school pages you will get an answer as they seem to lurk on those pages. Honestly. The high school page used to be like that. You would immediately get an answer back as they were watching what people were saying.

My son’s school goes out as long as it’s above 20 degrees even precovid. The kids are properly dressed though - hats, gloves, snow boots, pants, etc. Kids without proper gear need to stay inside.
I would be upset if he wasn’t properly dressed and forced to be outside. I hope you get a response today.

My kids always went out at daycare, cold, hot, rainy, etc BUT they were dressed properly and weren't out in freezing temps for very long. Just to get them out and some fresh air. I never had a problem with that but this is just ridiculous and not to get an answer either would have me fuming.

This is disgusting and I hope they are held accountable. I would be fuming mad. The focus is so much on Covid and positive numbers, that I feel like some corporation and school administrations are getting away with a lot of Bs. These poor kids.
Sorry Nell!

Re: Districts remote week of 1/3?
Thanks everyone. The thing is they sent an email to everyone in the district last night- like 5 pm ish- stating all these things like how bus windows will be open, classroom windows will be open etc and to dress your child accordingly. Ok fine. But nobody was prepared yesterday because we were not told this until way after hours. As anyone with a middle schooler knows, they don't dress for winter. Luckily my daughter has a jacket she will wear and had it with her for some reason - for the most part they aren't allowed to go to their lockers during the day to even get a coat if they had it. Some kids were in SHORTS Others had no jackets
She said someone was 'guarding the door" and not allowing them in. It was a shit show.
No response from anyone yet. I am in a parents group on FB and they are all equally outraged and everyone has been emailing and calling as well and threatening legal action.
I am waiting to see if anyone gets responses. They are also not allowing anyone to enter the school again other than students... so they won't even let us in if we go up there to speak to someone.
It's so infuriating!

Wow that's insane! And middle school in our district doesn't even have recess, so they wouldn't be outside on a normal day to begin with. I would be furious. It was so cold out, too.

Districts remote week of 1/3?
Nell, your story is making my blood boil. Please follow through on this and keep us posted. Do these ******* idiots in charge realize that other parts of the country are NOT DOING THIS???? My kids go to school like it’s 2019. No one has dropped dead yet! This makes me so angry.
We came to NY for a few days around Christmas. It was awful. Every other commercial on TV was telling me to get the vaccine. Newsday was ALL about Covid. The cashier at CVS told me to put a mask on.
People in other parts of the country are not living like this.

I know. If it was possible for me to move out of this horrendous state, I would be gone already. Funny thing about Newsday, I told my DH to please cancel the subscription because EVEYR SINGLE DAY the headlines are just Covid, Covid, Covid. I said, if Covid disappeared from the earth tomorrow, what they do with their paper? What could they possible use to fill the pages? It's ridiculous.
I'll keep you posted on what comes of the school thing. Nobody is responding to anyone. Which is even more disgusting.

This is HORRIBLE!!!! Our students are given a choice if they want to go out after they eat lunch. There is a handful of kids that do go out, and most are back in in minutes because it is so cold, and dont have a heavy coat.

Are you on the middle school page on fb? I know when I was on there, they would respond to that as the teachers and principal follows that.

This is making me so angry. DH is hellbent on moving and I was against it but seeing the normalcy elsewhere makes me want to go.
People were up in arms yesterday in a neighboring district as 200 people (staff and students) in the district tested positive over break. The post didn't stay up long as it started to go south but it's ridiculous that with masks and distancing - and such a high vaccine rate - we are where we are right now.

Are you on the middle school page on fb? I know when I was on there, they would respond to that as the teachers and principal follows that.
Yes there are 2 and I am on both. There is also an offshoot group for the entire district that has more people who are against vaccine mandates for kids and all these ridiculous rules and that board has been blowing up as well- though that one is private and only one BOE member is on it- one that thinks similarly- but no other school staff is on it I don't think

I would be so furious. My son is in middle/high school as well and they can't go to their lockers during the day. They all have to carry around these enormous backpacks so no one wears a jacket. You wouldn't be able to walk around with it all day. They all complain on cold days about the windows being open and the kids with the seats closest to the windows are freezing.
Also, while being cold technically can't make you sick, being cold for an extended period can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness, so this is outrageous. People in NY have legitimately lost their minds.

Ok. I also mentioned it on my mom and dads page. You are not on that one. I can invite you if you want.
