DIY Kitchen Remodel Cost
We are looking to remodel our extremely outdated kitchen. My Dh and dad are very handy and want to do the work themselves. We know we will not have a kitchen for a few weeks but that is ok. I am trying to figure out what this will realistically cost us. I am sure a few of you have done your own remodel. I was wondering about what it cost you. Pictures would be great.
Our kitchen is about 11x16. We have a new refrigerator but need to replace the rest of the appliances. I don't want to do anything extravagant. Honestly the kitchen is awful and any update would be a huge improvement.
This is what I have come up with so far from a little research.
Cabinets - $2,200 - $2,500
Appliances - $2,000 - $3,000
Tile - Aprox $1 - $2 a sq ft
Counter - $500 - $1,00 (Formica or something similar)
Sink - $200 - $300 (Including hardware, faucet)
Backsplash - ?

we completely gutted our kitchen 5 years ago & spent $5000
We replaced everything including the sheetrock & added electrical and we took down a wall.
Our house was "as-is" and this is what we started with
We have added a small island and replaced the vinyl floor with ceramic tile since this picture was taken.
The cabinets are from home depot, the formica counters are custom made.

We are actually going to be doing this the first week of March
My kitchen is a galley kitchen and pretty small
I have to get the exact measurements, but my cabinets were around 9k
I expect the granite to be around 2k??
The backsplash will vary - I chose a pretty expensive one, so I think I am going to go with a larger tile and then paint the rest of the wall to keep costs down
As far as appliances - I got those about a year ago from PC richards and they were having a good sale - I believe I got all kitchen appliances, with microwave plus washer for about 2k
My DH and father will be doing a majority of the work.

It cost us about $15,000. We started with a $5000 budget but unfortunately things came up unexpectedly

Thank you!!! This is similiar to the layout of my kitchen. DH and I plan to go check out Home Depot, Lowes and Ikea for the cabinets.
Your before photos are way nicer then our current kitchen.

We are still in progress and only needed a new microwave and range (already had a new DW and fridge). We replaced all the cabinets, removed the soffet (sp?) and re-sheetrocked that area, installed new cabinets, have ordered the granite (still waiting on install) and still have to do backsplash and tile floor. Our cabinets were $3600 (we assembled and ordered through closeoutcabinets.com--full wood cabinets w/ dovetail joints etc) including the hardware, granite is $1700 inc. a sink, we spent about $200 on the faucet and such, and probably about $500-$700 on supplies (tools, sheetrock, paint, etc) so far. Microwave was just under $200 and range was around $700.
So far we have spent ~ $7,000. I think floor and backsplash and light fixtures (we are looking for one flush mount and one small chandelier and are shopping around) will probably cost less than $1500 total. So I think we will come in around $8,500. Our goal was not to spend too much more than our $8K new homebuyer credit so I think we're doing ok!

We completely gutted and re-did our kitchen and did all the work ourselves. Cabinets were from Ikea, all the appliances were new, the floors were new - not one piece of the original kitchen was left - not even the sheetrock!
The total came out to about $13,000. We did all the work ourselves except for spackling/taping.
Here are some of the before/after pics:

Here it is gutted (except for the stove which we took out later because we had to get the gas shut off)
After: (it wasn't 100% done, but you get the idea)

We didn't replace our appliances (we got new ones when we first got married) but we basically gutted everything else. We put in new tile floor, all new cabinets, granite countertops, new hood, new sink and faucet and tile backsplash. I thin we came in around $12K.

I have an unbelievable wholesale cabinet maker if you want to take a look at his stuff.
He will work with any budget and the cabinets will be TOP quality at a wholesale price. He has his own woodshop in the Islandia Industrial Park. His work is phenomenal and there's no reason to pay retail prices when you could have the kind of quality wholesalers give at a fraction of the retail price.
He knows granite and tile guys but does not do granite or tile. He could refer you to some. He will come to the house, take a look at the kitchen, do a free estimate, come up with a floorplan, etc. He does install also or you could have your DH do that - I know you said he was handy.
