Re: anal glands?
thanks i actually was just reading it b/c i remember this being posted but here's the thing my dog can't lick!!! b/c it's a bulldog and they can't reach!!! so she tries to but can't!!! & bully's are also known to have tail problems soooo when she is trying to lick i am not sure if it's b/c of her tail or anal glands .....i always clean her tail and now i was wondering b/c i smelt something funny if it could be her anal glands??? she doesn't scoot...it's more the smell that is throwing me...and she is not spayed yet so i was wondering if the smell had anything to do w/ that? (she is going this week to get spayed so i will ask the vet about the anal glands too but i was curious right now about it!!) ohh these pups will drive you nuts!!

Re: anal glands?
my vet told me that for most dogs the gland does what it need to as far as draining each time the dog poops.. but I'v def heard of some dogs needing to have it be drained. I think your dog would scoot or seem bothered by it if it was an issue

Re: anal glands?
With my one dog, it was a strong, offensive, metallic smell. We found out what it was by asking the vet, so now if it ever comes back, there's no mistaking it!

Re: anal glands?
Well you cant miss this smell.. Pee-u.. Sometimes its fish butt and other times its very metallicy.. when you go to the vet ask him to show you how to do it just in case you need to do it.. ask him how ofen if at all he needs it done.. Mine is done every 2 week or so.. she definitely needs it.. I noticed that when I give her a bath she is more relaxed and more comes out.. I sometimes do it with out a bath in the tub and just wash her butt when i am done.. if there is the least bit of smell left she will go crazy so I have to make sure I wash it really good.. This sounds gross but she is my baby and I will do anything for her She really feels better when I am done... See what the vet says

Re: anal glands?
If your dogs begins scooting, their anal glands need to be expressed. It's supposed to excrete every time they poop but due to diet and breed sometimes it doesn't and the glads swell and then they can't go to the bathroom. I cannot do it myself. I tried! It smells sooooooo bad!! Bring your pup to the vet or the groomer. My groomer does it, it's included in the grroming pirce.
