You apply now because you wont get the benefit until the following year. If you wait till next year you will have to wait a whole nother year. Check with the town some have a jan 1 deadline others have march 1

We just applied for Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay. We had to send in our driver's license wih our new address on it and a copy of our deed. The form was mailed to us by the County, but you can also download it.
It said on the form that we would receive STAR in 2008 if we applied before January 2. So if you could get all the paperwork together in time, I would try to apply.
