do I have to have a cake? -dessert bar

Or would cupcakes be enough? I am now thinking of doing a little mini dessert buffet at DS' 1st bday. I was thinking cupcakes instead of cake, cake balls, chocolate covered oreos, pretzels and marshmellows, cookies, cream puffs, and then some blue cadies- like lolipops, gumballs, kisses, etc... Do you think that would be fine?
And for those of you who did something similar, how far in advance can I start doing some of these things? Can the chocolate covered things be done the week before and then just the baking done the day before?

UPDATE- My friend makes awesome fondant cakes so she's going to make me a mini cake in light blue with a white snowflake just for DS.

I would have a small cake so you can have a picture of blowing out the candle on the cake.

We are planning on giving cupcakes to everyone at DS's bday party but I'm still getting a small personalized cake for DS.

That's what I would do.

I would get a 3 tier cake stand, do a small (mini) cake for the top and put the cupcakes on the other tiers and around the stand if they don't fit. Then DS would have his own cake to blow out a candle, and everyone else can just grab a cupcake!

I did something similar, with lots of desserts and candy. I had a very small cake for each of the babies to smash and I also made a mickey/minnie cake and it was not touched!

I like variety, I usually don't like the cake, so I say no cake!
