Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!
So I am interviewing people for a position at my organization soon, and I have gotten soooo many calls asking about the status of the application. I don't know WHO is telling people that it is good to call to show interest, because really, if we want to interview you, you'll know! I am so sick of having to break the bad news over the phone that they didn't get an interview, and I would never give anyone brownie points for calling to express interest (hey, if you applied, I figure you are interested!). Anyone feel the same way?

I'm sorry, I do understand their frustration (and your own!), but I have spent the last 3 days fielding between 10 and 20 calls a day when I am trying to do my own work. I just wanted to put it out there that in my eyes it is a bad thing to call to follow up like that! One even asked me WHY she wasn't chosen...

Re: Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!
If they've applied online, perhaps using an auto-response stating "We are currently reviewing applications carefully, and will contact you shortly to discuss details."
Otherwise, I understand you're frustrated, a potential candidate shows great effort by following up, and I personally feel that it is important to do so.

I know exactly how you feel! I always put "No phone calls please" on my ads - and yet they still call!

There is an auto-response saying that (and if they submit online they also get an email confirmation), and they all received letters from me saying that the application was received and the committee will be meeting to choose candidates and interview shortly.
They're just asking when the interviews will be held, did they get an interview, why DIDN'T they get an interview, etc.

Re: Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!
I completely disagree with you, I do interviews all day long and when candidates call to ask if they might be having an interview it shows initiative and a bit of get up and go. There is no point for them to sit on their butts and wait for you to call them, they might really want the job and its incredibly important to that applicant that they know what point of the process their application is at.
They may be annoying, but they are people too, not just faceless job application.

I don't know, maybe it's that I work for the state and what we look for is so black and white that the call couldn't possibly help in choosing them in any way. Candidates get scored based on qualifications and the top ones get an interview, so there's no way I can say, hey, you don't have what we are looking for but you did take the initiative to call, know what I mean? I'm very sympathetic, because we've all been on the other end of the application process, but as an applicant I think I would now NEVER call someone to ask these questions because I know what a burden it is, and for me it would never be an advantage for the applicant.

I agree with this 100%...I would also call to follow up if I was interested in an interview and had not heard back...I see nothing wrong with that

Yeah, that's what I always read too, which is why I realized that I have a hard time believing that anyone would want to field these calls from every single applicant...It's a full-time job answering the phone!

My number AND EMAIL! was sent from HR in the letter that said we received the resume and would be meeting shortly to decide on candidates.
I did not know this until after the letters went out!

Re: Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!
I worked for the state and when sending in resumes for other state organizations, universities, etc. I always still followed up with an email, note card or phone call.
I've in fact done this --- there was a committee that would hold interviews and since I didnt know when it would happen, I called to find out and just to get my name in there again.
I ended up not getting the interview and 8 months later got a letter saying the job was filled. It's a very frustrating process!

Same here, it shows initiative I thought.
But if the application says no calls, or is floowed up by a letter saying the app was received....I guess calling is too pushy.....

While I sympathize that your work load has increased, I disagree with you and I believe the "follow up" is an important part of the job search process.... I've always done it, and it's what I like to see when I hire....

Re: Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!
I don't know, I guess I just feel like they aren't telling me anything new that they didn't tell me in the CV, so why bother? I guess if it was a sales job maybe I would appreciate persistence, but that's not the field I am in...Again, I know it shows me they want the job, but I assume the 120 other applicants want the job as well.
Maybe I'm in the minority...I kind of just feel like if you aren't telling me anything new, don't waste my time.
They were sent both a confirmation email as well as a stamped signed letter saying that the resume was received, so these are not questions as to whether we got it...

I have always been told by career counselors etc to follow up with a phone call. I never do though.

Re: Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!
clearly I'm in the minority here, but I've never called to ask if I got an interview upon applying for a job. I don't think I've ever followed up either. Bad business on my end, but I think it's worked to my advantage.

I wouldn't follow up with a call if I sent in a resume. I would follow up if I was contacted or scheduled or had an interview.

I'd never follow up if I sent in a resume. The only time I'd call to find out about my status is if I had another pending job offer.

ITA. Especially if I received a letter or email thanking me for my resume.
And to ask why you didn't get an interview just seems

Re: Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!
I'm going through this now
I have to get the acknowledgement letters out. I'd love to know how people get my personal work email address too??...so annoying. I like some interest, but more than one phone call, and i am totally turned off. You'll hear from us if we want to speak with you. It's such a slow hiring process where I work, frustrating...
