I disagree.
This recently happened to DH. He called and it ended up that his resume was overlooked. He ended up getting the job Chat Icon

Maybe for your specific company it is different but in general I think it is a good thing to follow up.

Re: Do not call me to ask about whether you got an interview!

I understand the frustration of having to deal with multiple follow-up calls and emails about the interviews, but I can also appreciate the applicant's perspective.

Using a job search engine like Monster, it's possible to have candidates send dozens of resumes to any and every place. As an applicant who submitted a resume on such a search engine, I might want to follow-up with a call to show the potential employer that I am really interested in THIS particular position with THIS employer and that I wasn't just picking potential employers by throwing darts at a board.

I completely disagree with you, I do interviews all day long and when candidates call to ask if they might be having an interview it shows initiative and a bit of get up and go. There is no point for them to sit on their butts and wait for you to call them, they might really want the job and its incredibly important to that applicant that they know what point of the process their application is at.

They may be annoying, but they are people too, not just faceless job application.

I completely agree. When my DH was looking for a job he found one he really liked and he applied and after a few weeks he didn't get a call so my sister recommended that he call. He did and they told him they couldn't find his resume so he emailed it to the HR person. He got the job and since then the HR person has told DH that he is very glad he contacted him because they may have missed out on a good employee.

I see your point, but all of these people got emails AND letters saying that we had their resume. A large committee reviews each and every file, and then it goes to an Equal Employment Committee to make sure fair hire practices are followed. The state system isn't like companies...But maybe these people were used to dealing with large companies. The job was not advertised on Monster, it was only in the NYT Ed. section and on the organization website.

I have always been told by career counselors etc to follow up with a phone call. I never do though.

I am a Career Counselor, and I always tell my students to make sure they follow up with a phone call to demonstrate interest and persistence.

I don't know about in the states, but here in the UK you are legally entitled to know why you weren't selected for a job and legally entitled to see all your notes around your interview, Assessment Centre etc. We give feedback to any candidate for any job that asks for it, whether they want to know why they were picked for the job, or why they weren't. Its your legal right to know why. Which is why we have to be so careful about hiring the right person, if you overlook someone with the right qualifications, they could take you to a tribunal. We probably give feedback to 20 candidates a week, and we do maybe 75/80 Interviews a day for our clients.

Wow, that is really interesting. I'm glad we don't have to do that here! I don't think I could tell people why someone else was hired that often.
