I'm glad I'm not alone. I'm a country girl at heart (honestly)... But really, chickens scare me... And llamas, but that's OT...
why do they scare you? Roosters can be mean, but chickens in general are sweet & they are way more afraid of you than you are of them!!!
If you've ever seen the animated movie chicken run, I can tell you first hand they are so much like that. My chickens know me, they know my voice, some of them know their names, they pretty much think I'm their Rooster. They are not afraid of me at all, they sit on my lap, do tricks for treats & come running when I call them. Anyway sometimes when the weather is nice, I go out to feed them or whatever with a towel wrapped around my head because my hair is wet. Most of them are smart enough to know its me, but my nervous ninny Genevieve (she would be the one that knits in Chicken Run) runs away from me skwaking & sounding the sky is falling chicken alarm & completely panicking, its hilarious. The rest of them just walk up to me & look at her like she's nuts. When they are afraid they act like weirdos.

I actually have plenty of experience with chickens and know they're more afraid of me... I've just always been afraid of them. I've lived in the country -- I've run several horse farms, most of which had chickens. I've had some bad experiences and some fine experiences, but I think I've actually always been fearful of them. I've just always been afraid of them and don't like handling them (though I've had to for years). I can't explain it - they creep me out if I have to pick them up or handle them -- and I've been taught to handle them properly. If it makes you feel any better, it's not just chickens -- I also have irrational fears of most birds and fish. Yes, fish. As in fish in fish tanks even. They totally creep me out and make me nervous. I'm an animal lover, but there are some animals that make me nervous for basically no good reason.
I never said my fear was rational or they are horrible animals. (To the contrary, they aren't. They are very common on horse farms because they keep bug and tick populations low... Plus, to date, I have no chicken-related scars! )
I don't hate them or think they're mean and nasty. In fact, I can't think of any animals I hate (unless we're counting bugs... LOL) I just have an admittedly irrational fear of them. Really can't give you a good reason why... Sorry.

I figured you've been around them plenty since you're a horse person & lots of stables have them. Some people just think they are ugly & their feet creep people out. Everybody is entitled to like or dislike whatever, I just try to get everyone I know to love chickens

Re: Do people really have roosters??
I'm afraid of them because I spent a week on a farm as a class trip and I had to dump the compost onto the pile and there were these huge roosters on it and they were kind of aggressive (or seemed so to me) and were making noises and approaching me. it reaaaallly freaked me out.
Fortunately I don't encounter too many chickens in Queens.

No, I don't think they're ugly. I'm afraid of getting pecked. Yup, I have an unreasonable fear of being pecked!
Their feet actually don't bother me at all.
I have to admit that my fear manifests itself in utterly hilarious ways (me running from chickens screaming) which will provide my DH and neighbors hours of entertainment when we eventually get a barn.
