Do suburban moms really use strollers?

DH and I went to test out strollers this weekend. I can't imagine pushing, folding, moving around with a stroller without the help of DH.

Then I thought how I drive everywhere and rarely walk. I don't think I would be taking baby to run errands or shopping.

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

I drive most places that involve errands (there are a few local shops within walking distance), but I enjoy walking around my neighborhood or along the trails by the river.

I am not much of a shopper so I doubt I'll be taking the stroller to the mall a lot, but I know it will get a lot of mileage just going around my neighborhood.

I drive everyone and run all errands with Andrew and always have. The stroller is really no big deal. It is second nature after awhile.

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

I probably won't use it as an everyday thing b/c I'll be working after the first 6 months ........So, going for walksa ta 7 PM probably won't be the best idea .........but I live right near the preserve and will definitely use it for walks in the beginning/weekends/vacations etc -

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

I personally find a stroller a neccesity. I even have more than one. I have the snap and go from when DS was a baby, I have a great umbrella stroller for when we travel, and I have a jogger. They all get their fair share of use.

I plan on using a stroller for walks around the neighborhood, trips to the mall and to run errands. For me, a stroller will be a necessity.

Maybe you were testing out some heavy ones. It's really no big deal.

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

I know what you're saying. Most of the strollers i am looking at weigh between 30-40 lbs. I am having twins and want a double jogger/all terrain. But hey its a workout right?! If you are concerned about the weight there are charts online that compare stroller weights and size

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

well, suburbanites use different strollers than urban folks...

the suburbanites get the light (usually a lot of plastic components) and easy to fold strollers that you can easily pitch into a car. the wheels are usually small becuase they're only rolling in shops and other areas with even surfaces...

heavier all terrains and bugaboo types are better for the urban set who are navigating bumpy sidewalks and walking outdoors much more..... (unless the suburban family is into going to parks or walks on a regular basis).

We were trying to choose between the Bugaboo Cameleon and the Orbit Infant System. I just couldn't imagine lifting and folding the strollers by myself in and out of the car.

I thought I would never take the baby anywhere unless DH was with me or I had someone else helping me.

We are getting teh Bugaboo Chameleon. But, we walk A LOT...... It is a 15 minute walk to main street in my town and to a lot of local parks. I tested the chameleon and found it to be fairly easy to use but then again I'm a pretty strong cookie Chat Icon

In the very early stages when DS could not hold himself up in a seat, yes we used the stroller constantly. I still use it now to go to the park and when we walk with him for leisure.

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

Every single time I take DD into a store from birth until about 7 or 8 months old. Then she could sit in a shopping cart. She's 2 now & I still use the stroller in some stores, especially the mall. One major requirement for my stroller was it had to be lightweight. We went with the snap & go with the infant seat at first, then the Peg Perego Pliko 3. Great strollers. So easy to open & close and get in & out of the car. I did it myself 2 weeks after my c-section with no problem. It just takes some practice at first.

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

It's a weird concept to me, but I plan to use mine often. We live close to a park and I plan to take Chat Icon there often. I think it's healthy for him to breathe the fresh air, and I will need to get the "baby weight" off somehow. I think it will be a good way to bond, and also get him to fall asleep!

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

absolutely.

it becomes second nature. if a stroller is too big or heavy for you, get a different one. i have the metrolite and it's a piece of cake to work and move around with.

i can't imagine not having one

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

I cannot even conceive not having a stroller. I used it when DS was 2 weeks old and we started going for walks in the neigborood. I did not run much errands at first but now it's second nature. I just do what I have to do and I take DS with me.

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

I can't imagine life without my stroller(s). I have different ones for different uses. Besides trolling the stores, and going for walks, it is invaluable when I need to go to a doc appt. I just put DD into it with a portable DVD player on and I can take care of business as I need to. Also, it is good for going to other outings like the carnival we just went to last week. Not only does it help because you don't have to carry them or chase them all day, but it is great for storing all the "stuff" plus it is great for containing them.

I hear the Bugaboos in particular are on the heavier side and somewhat less convenient to get in and out of a car. It might depend on which one but that could be why you found it to be heavy...

Re: Do suburban moms really use strollers?

I couldn't live without mine. I often have to take the baby with me and I could never carry him all that time.

Also, I have a big baby - he's been big since he was born. There was a time where he was too big for the infant seat and couldn't sit up well enough for the shopping carts. So, if I took him to a store, I had to use the stroller. Now, he is too big for a bouncy seat and almost too heavy for the pack and play, so when I leave him at someone's house for a while, I leave the stroller for him to sit or nap in.

ETA - get a lightweight one, I have a Peg Perego Pliko and I think it is only about 15 pounds and is pretty easy to get in and out of the car.

You absolutely need one. You'll go crazy staying home all day. Try other strollers, in the beginning all you need is a snap and go stroller.
