Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

I was thinking about this on the train this morning... My boss gave me a gift card to Apple for my birthday, and in the card he wrote, "I heard you were saving up for a new ipod". I don't think I've ever saved to buy anything. If I want it, I just buy it. If I can't afford it at the time, then I don't get it.

I don't know if maybe I just never wanted something bad enough.. but the thought of saving up for it makes me think I'd loose interest.

Do you save up to buy things?

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

i actually DO save up for things.

i often want many things at a time or dh and i are saving up for something (like going away or whathaveyou) and i want other things.

for example last month i needed to pay for a zillion things: tickets to a concert, money for Atlantic City, new boots, rent, credit card payment

there were sooo many things so instead of putting ALL my money towards one thing i spread it out to cover all bases..... so in the long run if its something expensive then yes, i do have to save up.

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

i am saving for a house.

if i want to by things - i usually put $100 a month into my savings account - so if i really want something ( a new coach bag is what it usually is) - i wait until i have enough in my "play" savings acct.

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

also, keep in mind i dont havea credit card anymore, so if i want something i HAVE to pay cash or use my bank card....

but i purposely dont carry tons of cash around and i ONLY deposit $ to the bank once ive bought something.

Me too! But it makes me feel kinda financially irresponsible when my EVP is asking about saving up for things. So he saves up to buy things...I make peanuts compared to him and I just buy on impulse..lol oh well Chat Icon

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

We saved for our house & wedding. Also we are saving for our retirement. Otherwise the money goes into savings & if I want something, I know the $$ is there to back me up. If it's something SUPER expensive, then I will wait until there is more of a cushion in the bank.

No, i just dont buy things.

If I want something, it has to wait til a holiday. Money has never been so tight around here.

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

I also think saving for a house is entirely different... That's something I will def. do.. but little things like ipods, bags, clothes... I just get it... I should really be more financially respsonsible when I think about it.

Besides that, I've lost all understanding of the price of things. Like $100 for a shirt is not expensive to me.. that's a problem I think...

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

I usually have the money to buy what I want. But I typically don't buy overly expensive things.

The only things we save up for are really expensive things. We save for retirement, home improvement projects, etc. I want bedroom furniture and a king bed so we'll start saving for that also. We saved for our wedding and a down payment in the past also.

But if it's under a certain amount I don't "save up" for it.

We always have money b/c we work our butts off for it. Hence every minute we are at work we are saving money.

If I see a Lacoste shirt, Fendi Bag, Gucci Bag....I buy it. I am not snobby but working is no fun so I deserve presents. Chat Icon

I know people that save up for a $200 shirt if they love it. I'd just buy it and not think twice.

I mean anything really.. an ipod, clothes, a bag...
