We always have money b/c we work our butts off for it. Hence every minute we are at work we are saving money.

If I see a Lacoste shirt, Fendi Bag, Gucci Bag....I buy it. I am not snobby but working is no fun so I deserve presents. Chat Icon

I like the way you think. I think that way too I just don't do it.

Shhh you think like my DH! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I try to practice self control. sometimes if I *really* want it, I will get it. but if it's a lot of $ and I would have to “save up for it”, I won't buy it.

If I bought everything I wanted, we'd be in huge debt Chat Icon and that's just not going to happen!

No, if I want or need something, I usually just buy it, but that hasn't always been the case. When I didn't have money in the bank a few years ago, yes, I would have to save up for it. But even now, although I can just buy what I want, I rarely, VERY rarely buy anything extravagant or too expensive. I felt SO guilty yesterday for buying new eyeglasses, which I NEED, for $300. I think it's the jewish in me Chat Icon Chat Icon

Um...yeah.

Mostly for big things like vacations, furniture, home improvements...

As for smaller purchases, usually what I save up for is mini-shopping sprees so I can shop guilt-free.

I don't save up for a shirt but I would save up for a high ticket item like a good camera or something...

I think I'm missing something here... the whole "I buy what I want when I want it" has me Chat Icon a little... I thought everyone saves up for something at some point (besides a house)... or maybe it's just me, but I don't go around buying $5k bedroom sets just cause I want/need one right now...

I do have to save up for things that I want at this moment, hopefully in the future it won't be like that anymore.

I only read the OP's post...and she was talking an iPod. That's what I responded to.

I certainly didn't mean big ticket items...especially since I pay for them cash...maybe that's why others posted that they don't save, because they buy on credit? Chat Icon

Well said. I totally agree. As far as small purchases go I buy what I want. Big ticket items we save for or put on a 0% interest credit card and pay it off before the 0% expires.

Yes, bigger things. Small stuff, like a pair of shoes, I wait until a good time, but I don't have a little 'fund.'

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

Only big stuff- my condo, maternity leave, retirement.
If I can't afford to buy it, then I don't. Or I wait until my birthday/Christmas when I get money from others.

But I will wait until the next month if I want something REALLY badly and just cut back on other stuff.

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

The only things I saved up for were my wedding and house (and retirement).

But that doesn't mean if I see something I want, I buy it. It just means that when we decide to make a big purchase, we have the money available and don't need to save up to afford it. For example, we decided to splurge on new couches, but we spent 2 years deciding which ones and whether or not to splurge.

I would say a purchase over $200, yes I do save for that.

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

I really should - it's a good habit to get into. I realized this was a problem for me when out dishwasher broke and we wanted to wush out to get a new one. God forbid we actually hand-wash dishes for a few months!!!!!

I definitely save for luxuries. For us, savings is savings, not for buying treats.

Re: Do you actually "save up" to buy something?

I save for expensive items. If I have something particular in mind that I really want, I save up to buy it.

If it's not expensive, and no "saving" is necessary, then I just buy it.
