do you belive some people are just lucky and other unlucky in life?

I decided to post this bc of my dh brokem leg .. he is having a pity party for himself. He is like can anything ever go right for me. With out listing all the things he listed it does seem like things are always hard for him and things for his brother are easier and just fall into place. Anything form breaking his ankle in the summertime when we just finally got our own cabana and this is the babys first summe. To minor stuff where the refrigerator which we bought from the previous cabana owner broke downa dn we had to buy a new one. To his car being parked on the street and being hit by a psotal truck and the back bumper cominng off (well thast was my car but still affects him)

There are other more imprtnat major things in his life that has gone wroing but thes are just a few recentones.
do you think some people just have an easier life and things go smoothly for them?

Re: do you belive some people are just lucky and other unlucky in life?

Well, this may be an unpopular response... but I think people attract what they put out. I think negative people will always see things as going wrong because they perceive everything pessimistically. At the same time, I think negative people tend to attract negative situations, etc. Positive people will attract positive people and positive situations into their lives more easily, and will better deal with any negative things that come their way.

If I broke my leg, I might have a brief pity party for myself, but I don't think I'd be thinking I'm just unlucky in life. I'd think "sh!t happens -- but otherwise, I'm doing okay!"

I'm not a full on believer in the ideas in "The Secret" -- but I do believe a lot of what was said in that book / video. I do, however, believe perception is about 80% of our reality.

When really bad things start or keep happening, we just have to try to remain positive and take steps toward positive things in life. We shouldn't dwell on the negative.

Good luck to your FH -- I am in no way trying to say "he deserves it" or "he brought this on himself." I bet he's just bummed about his leg (and has every right to be) and just needs a couple of days to get over the pity party. I'm sure things will be back on track soon. Chat Icon

I dont beleive in luck but I do beleive that God only gives us as much as we can handle. For some, that means an easier life, for others a harder one.

Re: do you belive some people are just lucky and other unlucky in life?

Rereading your post, I don't think too much of what you said has happened to him makes him one of the ones who is unlucky in life. I've had my car hit numberous times, have had appliances break, had several of my wedding invitations returned to me for "postage due," got screwed by my FSILs at my bridal shower, lost grandparents at an early age, lost more family members that I'd like to count, etc., etc. Bad stuff happens -- but I choose to focus on the good.

We all have good and bad in our lives, some of us more than others... but focusing on the good is important. If you believe you're unlucky in life, then you always will be -- b/c you'll always focus on the negative.

I am really not sure to be honest.

my DH can also be a "martyr" sometimes. he has told me since we first started dating that life isn't easy for the (insert last name) family. every now and then when something goes wrong for him, his mom or brothers, he says it again Chat Icon

I never respond but the thought that goes through my head is "you know, you're not the only people in this world wth problems!"

I HATE when he gets like that Chat Icon

I believe, in a way, we can control our destiny with our thoughts....Positive thinking results in positive situations, negative thinking results in negative situations.....ex.... If you asked any gold medal winner if they believed they would win.....All of them will say they envisioned themselves bowing down to receive their medal.....All were positive thinkers.....I don't think it's a coincidence that the majority of healthy, wealthy, and wise people are all positive thinkers

Re: do you belive some people are just lucky and other unlucky in life?

I have thought of this for myself before. Over the last few years it took me nearly three years to get pregnant. While trying to get pregnant it took hormonal shots to my belly for 5 months and numerous miscarriages. Once I finally got pregnant I has massive (all day and all night, and was dehydrated) morning sickness and one week after that subsided I started feeling the effects of what I thought was a sinus infection. Lived in pain going to many doctors from feb to may and finally found out I had a big ole tumor in my head which was wrapped around the optical nerve, the carotid artery and last but not least pushing into my brain. I lasted as long as I could in the pregnancy but we had to take my son early. He had numerous problems with his lungs and his heart and stayed in the NICU (neonatal intesive care unit) for two weeks.
After having him, I had a biopsy done, which caused massive bleeding out of my nose for days and was finally diagnosed (while I was visiting my son in NICU) as having a rare, inoperable head cancer.
Thru the cancer treatments I endured chemo and radiation which caused me to lose my hair, my vision and my hearing (on the left side) it burned my face, and made my throat and tongue swell up and become one massive puss infection...so bad I couldn't eat and ended up getting a feeding tube. Follwed by a stint in the hospital with a massive infection, pneumonia as well as other thing. The infection was being caused witht he port that was surgically put into my chest (to administer the chemo) and the infection was soo bad that docs had to get it out "stat" and since there was no operating rooms available, they did it bedside and I got little to know anesthesia.
La la la, since then I have been plauged with various infections nad fungus throughout my body and have been diagnosed with something each month since.
As my story unfolds and we kept getting bad news I did go thru a brief period of "why me" and "I have such aweful luck" frames of mine. Since then though, I have realized it is simply not true.
Take the things that happen that we think are so "bad" and learn and grow from them.
Being sick and having a sick son I have seen my friends, family, and complete strangers rally for me, in a way that I could never imagine. I got to learn how loved and lucky I am and I got to learn a lot about myself and how I percieive this world and the next.
I continue to stay upbeat and have a positive attitude...It's the only way to go or you can get pulled into a dark hole of depression.
I hope hubby's leg feels better soon and that he can read my story and realize: "Gee, life isn't THAT bad."

solve them

Sorry, I foget most of the people here know the entire story. Sometimes, I really think it helps to put it out in synapsis form.
I tend to agree with your thought process of It's only a broken leg and it could be worse frame of mine. To me, that's the best thought process you can have.

Re: do you belive some people are just lucky and other unlucky in life?

I think some of it is perception, some of it is the luck you make yourself, and some of it is the attitude you have that the rest of the world sees.

No one likes to be around negative, whiny people so those with that attitude will tend to reap less "luck" or favors than others with a happy, positive attitude.

That also colors your perception of course. My DH always sees the negative side of things, not the good side. I always say I see the glass half full, others would see it half empty, and he sees it as half empty with a crack in the glass.

As for the luck you make yourself, sometimes the actions you take can lead to the "bad luck". Maybe if he'd taken care to park in a safer location the car wouldn't have been hit (my DH will never park on a corner for that reason). Not sure how he broke his leg, but maybe he could have been more cautious, worn sturdier shoes, not climbed something, etc. Perhaps it was just unavoidable, but often when one looks back, their own action had something to do with the outcome.

I hope he comes around and doesn't make the whole summer unbearable - it's not easy to deal with that when you're on the other side. Good luck!

i agree about what you do affects what happens but with his leg he simply stepped of the curb wrong. with the car it was parked where we always park it and the way the postal truck hit it was just plain odd. things ike that that are rare or freak accidents get to him.
