Do you belive that Gov should tell you how to donate your money? Or how to spread the wealth?
Just Curious
I am generous and give to causes and people I believe in and I know need the help.
I get really upset when I hear that I should pay more taxes to support programs the gov thinks I should support.
What is your view?

I do.
Right now the top 10% of income earners already pay 71% of the taxes. Top 1% paying the most percentage wise. I am no where near the top 1% but when I am being taxed in order to pay for programs that I would NEVER support, that is wrong IMHO.
For example: this bailout, I would never pay for that...yet I AM paying for it b.c gov mandates me to pay for it. Then there are social issues and programs I would never donate to b/c they do not line up with MY value system, yet here I am paying taxes, paying for it. So when Obama says "spread the wealth" he IS talking about raising taxes.

Neither to I. But what's the alternative? I doubt anyone will ever be entirely happy with what the government spends tax money on.

I believe there is a middle ground. I also believe if government programs were based on the "charity" of others, we would be in a lot of trouble.

The concept of wealth distribution is creepy to me. The whole idea of that is being pitched as a reasonable solution to our country's problems & a platform for a well liked leader frightens me about what our country will be like at the end of our lifetime.
We are that generation that was born before the new century-think about the changes people born in the 1880 & 1890's saw in the country & in the world in their lives. Some of the changes were magnificent, some horrifying. I think our generation will have many parallels with that one.

Isn't the point of governement to support it's people? Part of the way this is done is by creating programs to help people. I do not believe in many of the programs created by the governement. However, I doubt I ever will.

The idea wouldn't bother me as much if the uber-wealthy in America would really be paying more in taxes. People like Warren Buffet structure their compensation and charitable giving in ways that minimize their taxes. Why do you think he takes most of his compensation in company stock? So he doesn't pay tax on it until he cashes them in, if he ever cashes them in. That's why he pays less in tax than his secretary.
People who are making over $250,000 household income fall into AMT, they are not able to write off their children against their taxes, nor did most get the "economic stimulus" check. They are already paying more in taxes, it's just hidden in a variety of IRS codes and government programs.
This is why I wish the government would switch to consumption taxes rather than income taxes. It's a lot harder to skirt paying tax at the cash register than it is to find loopholes in IRS code.

The military is not charity. It's different to pay taxes to support a military program that helps to protect you and your family. It is the same as paying taxes to support your local police department. If you don't believe in how that military program is being run, well then you need to vote to elect new officials. But the governments purpose is not necessarily to decide what charitable organizations and social support programs your money goes towards.

EXACTLY my point. Plus, if everything the gov touches turns to into a fiscal failure, WHY, WHY WHY should we pay MORE taxes so they can fail with MORE money over and over again??? If you ran a business like that NO ONE, No Bank or lender would be giving your business more and more money to continue to fail with.
For those of you who believe the bigger gov or more gov programs are the answer, I really want the answer to this question. I truly do not get it.

I agree with this.
let's face it. everyone pays a tax somewhere to "support" something they don't agree with OR even us.
I am paying school tax in Orange County. my children will NOT be attending school there. but MY money will go to helping OTHER children become (hopefully better) educated. I am FINE with that.
judging from all the threads on social services, if we relied on WE, the people to voluntarily support each other, we'd be in dire straights.
we still don't GET how we are ALL in this together. rich, poor, in the middle...if one aspect of our society is left to founder, we ALL will.
but as soon as we here "higher taxes" we rationalize and make up reasons (often times ERRONEOUS) as to why those less fortunate don't "deserve" our help.
I am honestly aghast at some of the things I am reading today. my stomach actually HURTS from it...b/c I honestly want to beat the ish out of some people  there is just too much disdain in this world. really.

He will be the death to capitolism.
spread the wealth means that YOU will be paying for your neighbor's mistakes and misfortunes. you will lose more of your hard earned paycheck to taxes which help other people. you will not be able to save as much of your money.

Socialism? How does an increase in taxes equate to socialism? For DECADES this country has taxed its constituents to fund programs, this does not mean we are living in a socialist society. The fact is, this country has come under dire circumstances that have not been similarly seen since the depression. I would expect the current administration to respond appropriately and swiftly, just as the administration did during that period. I would hardly call the U.S. a socialist state during those times, nor would I now.

Problem is, if everyone thought this way, and acted on it, we would ALL be living some scary lives. And I guarantee if, for some reason, you fell on hard times, you wouldn't feel the same way.

So at least with Obama is being up front and saying, we're going to need tax dollars to do this. Those who fall in the category of making more than $250K will be hit the most.
No one likes paying taxes but it's unavoidable.

I think the government has failed to utilize taxpayer money in an efficient way. Private organizations are more efficient and i would rather contriibute to them. Honestly, if govenrment programs are so great, why doesn't communism work?

b/c Ideals are ideals and people are people.
communism doesn't work for the same reason companies can be corrupt.
there will always be a person that wants MORE than the next guy.
the Kremlin was living way better than the average person in Moscow or the rest of Russia.
it wasn't true communism. we'll never see true communism.

i'm all for helping those in need and donating to causes that touch my heart, but i do not want to be forced to.
the more taxes taken out of my paycheck to help those in need, the bigger the chance i will become part of that category, as will many hard working american taxpayers. if that happens, it wont pay to work anymore.
i agree w/ the OP that say the gov't needs to learn how to use the taxes currently taken out of our paychecks more effeciently.

Problem is that the top 10% of income earners already pay 71% of the taxes. Obama thinks he can keep taxing and all will be ok. Ted Kennedy tried that in 1990 when Congress imposed a luxury taxation on yachts. He was quoted as saying that the rich will finally be paying their fair amount of taxes...know what happened? Yacht retailers reported a 77% decrease in sales and boatbuilders laid off thousands of people.
