I believe there is a middle ground. I also believe if government programs were based on the "charity" of others, we would be in a lot of trouble.
etd. I voted "Other" because your poll is skewed.
I agree with this.
let's face it. everyone pays a tax somewhere to "support" something they don't agree with OR even us.
I am paying school tax in Orange County. my children will NOT be attending school there. but MY money will go to helping OTHER children become (hopefully better) educated. I am FINE with that.
judging from all the threads on social services, if we relied on WE, the people to voluntarily support each other, we'd be in dire straights.
we still don't GET how we are ALL in this together. rich, poor, in the middle...if one aspect of our society is left to founder, we ALL will.
but as soon as we here "higher taxes" we rationalize and make up reasons (often times ERRONEOUS) as to why those less fortunate don't "deserve" our help.
I am honestly aghast at some of the things I am reading today. my stomach actually HURTS from it...b/c I honestly want to beat the ish out of some people there is just too much disdain in this world. really.
I couldn't agree more.

If McCain was pro-choice and everything was the same about the candidates on taxes and the economy...who would you vote for?
I have said it before- and I will say it again
I could care less about abortion this election
over 60% of people in this country are voting the way they are b/c of the economy
and you should read the link and chart posted on the tax thread- b/c unless you PROFIT more then $250K from your business you will NOT be effected by Obama's plan- you will be helped b/c he wants to give you tax credits for health care and creating jobs
you will not be giving more money to the government
if Obama was pro-life- would you vote for him? b/c don't take this the wrong way, I know your beliefs- and I seems from your posts- you vote on this issue
Obama didn't say he was going to increase all governement programs either- he said he was going to look at them, help the ones that worked, get rid of the ones that don't, and move the money around- I never once heard this huge increase that you are so fearful of

Re: Do you belive that Gov should tell you how to donate your money? Or how to spread the wealth?
Should government demand that your taxes support gov programs you do not agree with?
Yes. This has been debated by philosophers for years, the point being that, if we lived in an unregulated society without government, anarchy would rule, and we would live some pretty damn scary lives. The trade off for stability and security, is that we all contribute to a working government that we don't always necessarily agree with. If, as a society, we were given the choice of contributing our taxes to policies we agree with, we would never have a functioning government with any power behind it.
Should the tax system in this country be changed to a flat tax?
No. The government needs $$ to work. We are a preeminent country in this world because of our wealth, our ability to employ our army without hesitation, our ability to employ necessary, sophisticated programs and technology. A flat tax would either be drastically unfair, by requiring the poor masses to pay an equal amount as the rich, or wouldn't provide enough funding to the daily operation of the government by lowering the flat tax so all could afford it. Our country would fall flat on its face without the funding it needs from taxes.
Do you see this move to spread the "wealth around" as a step towards socialism?
No. Since the inception of this democracy, we have always paid taxes, to contribute to a functioning government, and a greater good. With each decade the *amount* we pay wavers, depending on the administration and economic circumstances. Right now, economic circumstances are dire, necessitating a change in the tax structure - it's an understandable cyclical event.
Do you feel that if you taxed businesses and the wealthy that jobs in the private sector would be lost?
No. I don't think it would make a significant enough impact to drive businesses to close and the wealthy to stop working.
If McCain was pro-choice and everything was the same about the candidates on taxes and the economy...who would you vote for?
I would never vote for Obama. It isn't just his abortion stance that dissuades me.
If you work the public sector...city, state or federal and you answered this thread, so you feel that your answer ins biased b/c a bigger gov ultimately may mean more $$$ for you in an Obama Administration (a raise, promotion, or the like)?
No. I assure you, even my agency is feeling the impact right now, with a freeze on hiring, travel, and any supplies expenses. We work like rats, so I can assure you an increase in taxes wouldn't necessarily mean more $$ in my pocket. Are you worried about loosing your job (or if you spouse or SO is in the public sector) if you are a tenured teacher? a police officer? a federal employee?
No. There will always be a need for my job as a federal employee - defending the rights of students and ensuring that public educational institutions are following governmemnt regulations.

To answer your fist question about McCain being pro-choice: Honestly, I would have a very hard time with that one, I would.
As for everything else. I have seen both plans. If you an an S-Corp or independant contractor you will be taxed under a higher percentage on obama's plan. Articles posted today as part of fact checking the debate: MArket Watch Article -TODAY ; Americans for tax reform article - TODAY ; another article The facts are that if you own a business "This 54.9 percent tax rate would be the highest since the Carter Administration, when America suffered through double-digit inflation and unemployment (Source: Congressional Budget Office)" Quoted form the article I posted.

Just Curious
I am generous and give to causes and people I believe in and I know need the help.
I get really upset when I hear that I should pay more taxes to support programs the gov thinks I should support.
What is your view?
So what is your solution, I would prefer that not one single of my tax dollars went to the war, how do you propose we go about making that possible? I would love to hear your answer.
I think its unrealistic to expect that you will agree with everything that the Govt spends the tax revenue. i mean seriously.

Americans for Tax Reform was founded in 1985 by William Barr, who would become United States Attorney General in late 1991, to organize grass-roots support for President Ronald Reagan's 1986 Tax Reform Act. William Barr is also running for President this year as the Libertarian Candidate.Bob Barr
From their website: "they are an a coalition of taxpayer groups, individuals and businesses opposed to higher taxes at both the federal, state and local levels. ATR organizes the TAXPAYER PROTECTION PLEDGE, which asks all candidates for federal and state office to commit themselves in writing to oppose all tax increases. To date, President George W. Bush, 193 House members, and 41 Senators have taken the pledge. On the state level, 7 governors and 1,221 state legislators have taken the pledge."
They have posted a lot about both candidates' tax plans.

I see, from what I am reading, it is closely tied to republicans and as such, no necessarily free of slant.

There is more of a Libertarian slant to it. Libertarian's believe in as little taxes as possible and very little governing laws. They believe abortion rights should be left up to states and most major decisions should be state mandated, not federally mandated.

Obama is talking about socialism. He will be the death to capitolism. spread the wealth means that YOU will be paying for your neighbor's mistakes and misfortunes. you will lose more of your hard earned paycheck to taxes which help other people. you will not be able to save as much of your money.
