Do you buy meat in bulk and freeze?
It's just DH that eats meat, so when I buy chicken or steak, I buy packages that have several portions in them, bag them and freeze them. I take out portions as needed and defrost in the frig.
My MIL told me the other day that she heard that is bad b/c it exposes the meat to new bacteria. I don't want to get DH sick but what else is there to do with all this extra meat?
I personally prefer to also buy it when it's on sale. For instance, I got 4 steaks for $10 today. Woo hoo! That's 4 steak dinners! Or is it? Is it bad to repackage and freeze meat?

You shouldn't freeze meat, defrost, and re-freeze it. That's when new bacteria grows on the meat.

Agreed. We freeze our meat until we are ready to use it. Otherwise I'd be at the store every 2 days!

yup- thats what I heard too- although my grandma always told me that you can refreeze it if you cook the meat- I made meatballs from frozen chop meat, broiled them and re-froze them and they were fine

i freeze my meat, and my mom did the whole time i was growing up--- i never got sick. its the best way to do it, so you always have some on hand

Exactly. I always freeze our meats and then defrost them in the fridge as I need it. But I never REfreeze it after that (unless it's cooked).

We buy all our meats in bulk at BJ's or Costco. I double wrap in saran wrap and then put in freezer bags. They have always been fine. Again, I too would never defrost meat and re freeze.

I go to the butcher about once a month and freeze what I won't be using right away (most of it, obviously)....this is how my mom did it, too...you SHOULD save yourself some money by doing it that way!

I always buy meat in big packs and separate and freeze it, never had a problem. I always freeze it in some marinade so it marinates while it defrosts.
