Wow, I am so surprised I am the first to respond yes. I am doing a small gift exchange with some friends, (see Sasha's post  ) but I also buy for my 3 closest friend's kids, which is 5 kids, and another good friend, another 2 kids. I never thought of not buying for them.
ETA - we used to buy for each other, now we just buy for the kids. My other closest friend who doesn't have kids, will buy my DS gifts and I'll get her and her hubby something.
Also - just realized, I don't have any kid family members to buy for so maybe that is why it's not too overwhelming.

just for my BFF's DD. BFF and I have been exchanging for years and now we just buy each others DD. I cant afford to buy for all of my friends DC even though I would like to.

We exchange something small with my next door neighbors kids and two of my close friends children.

My one friend has older kids (5 and 7), I have always gotten them gifts and will continue to do so.
My other friends have kids my DD's age. We don't exchange. One baby is my DH's Goddaughter, so we will buy her something (and her brother so he's not left out).

I also stopped exchanging gifts with my friends and instead just buy for their kids. Right now it is DD's godmother's kids and my godson and his sister

Amongst my friends there are too many kids now to buy for everyone so we started doing a Kris Kringle for the kids where each of us ends up buying for like 2 kids with a $15 gift limit. It works out great! All the kids get a few gifts and it doesn't break everyone's bank.
