Re: Do you donate to the Salavation Army when you walk into a store?
Yes.
I was actually wondering the other day how much I donate to various casues throughout the year. I always say yes when asked to donate at a checkout, always give to the salvation army every time I pass, give to some charities who collect door to door.
It must add up!

I do. They did a lot for my uncle when he became homeless a while back. After my parents dealt with them first hand with my uncle I have come to greatly respect all the great work they do. They are a wonderful organization.

Yeah, I was going to say the same. I don't donate to them. I donate to other charities that support the values that I do more.

What can you tell us about the Salvation Army other than they ring a bell and wear red?
Just because you support organizations that discriminate doesn't mean the rest of us leave our morals at home.
Whooo and let's back up a minute.
That's like saying that someone that goes to a Catholic Church supports discrimination as well. Does the Catholic Church support homosexuality? No. I am Catholic and I go to church, I believe in Christianity. Do I agree with every aspect of Catholic teachings, no, but don't put it out there that I "leave my morals at home" because I support the Catholic Church and The Salvation Army - a Christian based organnization.
Some little 4 year old boy iin Suffolk County is getting a winter coat, some pj's and a few toys because I decided to help out the SA. I'm sure this little boy isn't so concerned about the hiring practices at SA, he just needs a coat becuase it's 28 f'in degrees outside.

I won't pass a red kettle without donating a dollar. My dad was an FDNY firefighter and always said that the Salvation Army was always the first organization to show up to a fire, with food, blankets, coffee, etc.

The Salvation Army is an Evangelical Church. Did you expect evangelicals to be warm and fuzzy about homosexuals? You may want to read the wiki on them.

Maybe in your initial post you could have explained why you do not give to the charity.
Some people, like myself, may not have known about this. An explanation and some information would be appreciated.
Telling us we leave our morals at home and support racists, not so much.
You are tactless and crude. Yet I sit here and smirk at the way you speak so condescending to people. But really you who think you know so much are the one who has much to learn.
I wonder if you are this socially inept in person or only on LIF.

I choose not to support an organization that not only refuses to hire homosexuals, but has also refused aid to homosexuals when in need AND threatens to close down its soup kitchens (how charitable!). There are plenty of wonderful charities out there that provide wonderful services for ALL people. I choose to donate my money and time to those organizations.

I answered the question that was asked about the specific organization The Salvation Army. I know what it is and who founded it etc. I DO NOT support any organization that promotes discrimination. IMO, if you recieve federal funding (like the SA) you should not be exempt from anti-discrimination laws. And yes, before it's asked that should include the militarty.

It's fine that you choose to overlook these shortcomings of the SA and the church, but someone of us choose to not overlook them. Personally, I was raised a Catholic and chose to leave the religion because I cannot deal with the discrimination, and personally, I don't agree with the SA and their stance on homosexuality, so I choose not support them. However, somewhere, another child will have a coat because of me even though it's not donated through the SA. So just because some people can overlook the discrimination doesn't mean the rest of us should. We all do what we think is right. In this case, some of us don't feel we want to give our own money to an organization that goes against our beliefs.

I have absolutely no problem with whatever charity or organization that anyone supports or doesn't support for that matter. I think it's wonderful that people are generous and give what they can to those less fortunate.
If you have a problem with SA or any other religious organization, that's fine, not my business. The truth is that I donate most of my annual contributions to Little Shelter in Huntington, because that is where my heart is, with the animals that need help. I didn't get to have children and this time of the year kind of hurts for me. So I like to help a child that probably wouldn't get to have a special Christmas, it makes me feel good picturing that child opening the presents I took the time to wrap with paper and ribbons. It warms my heart. It is my choice.
But what the previous poster said about "leaving your morals at home" is just rude. I'm not saying anyone should give to SA, but I shouldn't be told I'm leaving my morals at home because I DO. If she would be so kind to indulge me, would annoyedTTCer please explain to me where 1. I left my morals at home by buying presents for a 4 year old boy and a 5 year old girl and 2. from what pedastal she gets to look down on me to say so.
There is a very un-Christian part of me that wants to tell her to kiss my azz. Whoops...maybe I just did. Merry Christmas.
edited for clarification.

That's fine. I think everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
However, every single organization has "shortcomings." Nothing is perfect. If I chose to only donate to organizations that never made errors or mistakes, I would not donate at all.
My belief is that if I see a person from the Salvation Army, I should give them money, because that money is going to help someone who is in severe need. I see it as I am helping the individual without clothing, food, shelter, etc.
It is not as though I am contributing money to fund some sort of televised campaign promoting discrimination against people.

No one, well not me, is saying that you should give anything to anyone against how you feel. You do what you feel is right for you, no judgement on my part, it really does not matter to me in the least who you give to or not give to. But I shouldn't be judged either and be told I'm leaving my morals at home because once a year I adopt a SA Angel..oh and I go to Church. (this was not from you, but a pp).

Good for you. I read the question. I was responding to you and the snark-meister. Gave you a few more examples of who not to support or accept from when you are in need. Don't give to the SA. Don't accept from them either. They don't refuse to help homosexuals. They don't agree to the lifestyle, so they won't ordain a homosexual be a minister. Par for the course of a lot of churchs. It's not something that I agree with but I've seen the good that they have done. I will still stick a buck or two in that red bucket when I walk past.

IrishLass & JAAMS-I'm with you. No organizations is perfect & I don't really like to give money blindly, but they do actually help some people, so I did choose to donate to the Angel Giving Tree, b/c I know where that is going.
I have also volunteered for the Gay Men's Health Crisis in the past.

Don't forget Walmart sucks too
Not usually. If I'm with the kids & they want to put spare change in, then I'll give them it but otherwise, no. I donate throughout the year to other charities (girl scouts, Big Brother/Big Sisters, American Cancer Society, Toys for Tots). No guilt here either.
I see nothing wrong with passing them by or declining requests for charities. I actually hate being solicited directly at the register - especially after I've just spent $100+ for Operation Shoebox & the cashier is pushing customers for donations.
I think it's great that people look into their charities & see where their money is going & if they support their beliefs. I don't agree with the Salvation Army's policies (or the Catholic Church's) on discriminating against homosexuals or the Boy Scouts stance on making grown men wear a boy scout uniform, but the kid in Haiti that's opening up a shoebox filled with toys & supplies doesn't care about policies so I overlook it.

Yes, I always do. If my money is helping someone less fortunate than me, great. I didn't know the complete background on them, and will do some more research on them, but when I see someone outside freezing and ringing a bell for those less fortunate i try to give any spare change i have.

What are their policies? I wasn't aware of this. :(
If you do a Google search you'll find a lot of other information.
Controversy [edit] United States [edit] Opposition to hiring homosexuals The Salvation Army in the U.S. has been the topic of some controversial discussions about discrimination against homosexuals in their hiring practices.[27][28] The New York Times reported that the Salvation Army believed it had a firm commitment from the White House to issue a regulation that would override local antidiscrimination laws. A disclosure of The Salvation Army's request "outraged some civil rights groups and lawmakers," and resulted in an immediate reversal of a previous promise to honor the request.
The Salvation Army maintains that they were "not trying to get permission to discriminate against hiring gays and lesbians for the majority of its roughly 55,000 jobs and merely wanted a federal regulation that made clear that the charity did not have to ordain sexually active gay ministers and did not have to provide medical benefits to the same-sex partners of employees."[29]
The Salvation Army's position is that because it is a church, Section VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 explicitly guarantees its right to discriminate on the basis of its religious beliefs in its hiring. To reinforce its position, it threatened to close all soup kitchens in New York City when the city government proposed legislation that would require all organizations doing business with it to provide equal benefits to unmarried domestic partners.[30]
thank you for posting this information. while I may not agree with their policies, I can't overlook the good work they do. So I would still donate a dollar here and there.
