For a birthday call, no... For an RSVP, yes... I hate it when I think they aren't home and then they answer!

Re: do you ever call someone KNOWING they arent home
I would tend to give her the benefit of the doubt because it is your sister on your birthday. Maybe she had something scheduled for the afternoon, thought of you and wanted to give you birthday wishes when it was on her mind?

Re: do you ever call someone KNOWING they arent home
Have you talked to her since the argument? If so, I think you are reading too much into the phone message. If not, then maybe you are right. She's not ready to talk to you but didn't want to let your birthday pass without saying happy birthday. Either way, it's a step in the right direction towards reconciling.

Yeah, I wouldn't call to wish someone a Happy Birthday knowing they weren't home and leave a message. I would call to RSVP to something or to remind someone of something...things like that.

Re: do you ever call someone KNOWING they arent home
I'm sure she wasn't ready to speak with you yet, or uncomfortable since you haven't spoken since your argument and that's why she called while you weren't home... but at the same time she didn't want to let your birthday go by without birthday wishes.
In my family, you would not have received a call - period - so I have to give your sister a little credit for at least doing the right thing and wishing you a happy birthday. Not that my family is a good example because they're not, but just to show you how some other families can be.
Happy (belated) birthday!

Re: do you ever call someone KNOWING they arent home
I have done this. Usually, it's because I just need to tell the person something that can wait and I don't want to bother them at work. However, I have also done this when I need to convey something but am not in the mood to talk.

Re: do you ever call someone KNOWING they arent home
I will do it for an RSVP if I don't really know the person (like if I get invited to a friend's baby/bridal shower and don't really know the person I'm RSVPing to) - But I HATE when people do it at SUCH obvuious times. - I have a cousin who calls at like, 3 PM during the week. - Ummmmmmm, Ok- I know you're a teacher and get off at 2:30 - but I work in the city, and you know I get home at 7 .......If you REALLY want to talk to me and touch base, WHY would you call me at home 4 hours before you know I will be there ?? - I can understand if you call at 7 and I'm not there, Ok fine. - But really? 3:00 during the week ?? And then say "Oh I call you ALL the time and try SO hard to keep in touch" ........ ??

Re: do you ever call someone KNOWING they arent home
I am guilty of doing this....espcially if I know I owe someone a call and I am just not in the mood to chat it up. This way at least they know I am thinking of them
