Do you ever give up on a book?

I rarely give up on a book. I feel that once I have invested time into any story, however bad it may be, I have to see it through. Probably O.C.D.

Well, I bring this up because I quit " I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" I waited for this book for two months, heard it was "so funny," on the Times best seller's list, yadda yadda yadda. I consider myself to have a pretty good sense of humor and I am not easily outraged or grossed out, but when I got to the chapter: Tucker f**ks a fat girl, I closed the book and surrendered. It wasn't funny, it was mean. I didn't like the narrator at all and couldn't continue to learn about his journey through bars and women. I think what really got to me is that I have seen literally countless boys in the high school I teach at carrying and reading this book. It's become some cult classic. Really alarmingChat Icon

I do all the time. There are too many good books out there to waste my time on something that doesn't hold my interest or offends me in some way.

The converse of that would be: Why spend more time doing something you dont enjoy that you don't even need to do?

If I find I am not enjoying a book, I'll put it down. Just like I would change the channel or turn off a dvd. There's so many options out there.

Rarely, but if I just can't get into it...I give up.

I started Audacity of Hope and after two weeks of trying to get through 50 pages, I gave up.

See, I run middle ground with this...
To me, sometimes reading a book that didn't grab your attention right away really pays off.
But, if I keep trying and can't get into it - I agree with why force yourself to enjoy something....

I quit a book if I don't love it. I couldn't get through the Glass Castle.

Oh absolutely! I don't give up right away. In fact Anne Rice's The Witching Hour is the perfect example for me. It took me a good 150 pages to really get into and it turned out to be one of my favorite books.

No problem! You know, sometimes the movies are better than the books, and vice versa. I thought The Notebook (the book) was slow and I didn't really like the book, but I liked the movie.

Rarely, but I do remember the three books I gave up on:

Lord of the Rings- I coudln't follow all the footnotes to fictious literature and bibles.

Anna Karennina- I kept getting confused by the charachter's names.

Perdido Street Station- Just not my cup of tea at ALL.

Re: Do you ever give up on a book?

I've been reading Three Cups of Tea. Everyone tells me it's wonderful and I do like it but it's just not a book that I am eager to get back to all the time. I am now almost at September 11 and I assume that this book will get very interesting now. I guess I feel that I already know the outcome of the book, so even though I can learn a lot, I don't feel like I have to run back to find out what happens next. I do want to finish this one, but my last few books pulled me in more.
