Do you feel it's a plus to be walking distance to shopping/eateries, etc?

Do you feel it's a plus to be able to walk to shops, eateries, store, park etc...or do you prefer to be more secluded away from these things?

I think it would be great to be in walking distance. So much easier to plop your kids in a stroller then have to do a carseat and stroller!

It depends. Like I wouldn't want to live on one of the blocks right off Bellmore's downtown, so many people park around there for the movies and stores that it's really busy, especially on the weekends. But a few blocks away so that it's still walkable and I don't have to struggle to park in front of my own house would be nice.

Re: Do you feel it's a plus to be walking distance to shopping/eateries, etc?

I'm interested in these responses. I'm just a few blocks from the train, shops etc. and it was definitely a factor on why we picked our home. I routinely walk to the stores with my shopping bags, Rusty walks to the train 2x a week, and I see a lot of my neighbors go by my house doing the same.

I'd like to think people are walking more these days, but I'd probably be wrong. If I had children to pack up and go to the store with, I'd probably want to drive too for convenience.

All that said, I wouldn't want to be facing commercial property or even the first block.

As someone who has lived in the city, or just outside since college-- it's a plus for me, but I wouldn't want to love near a "busy" street... but just close to the action.

We don't of course have that now, but within a 5/10 min drive to a cute downtown. That was important to us to still have a "city" feel.

Currently we live like a 10 minute walk from the main "road" of our town...On non oppressive heat daysChat Icon I'll walk with DD to get pizza, shop, whatever I need to do and I do like it...it gets me to get out and not be in the car lugging her in and out..but as PP posters said I would not want to live near a main road that's busy...

Well we are big walkers (mainly due to the dogs). We walk every night. I have grown to enjoy it. And if something was walking distance to my current home, I would be walking all the time. The nearest store is over 1 mile and I have done it but not often b/c you can't get cold things.

What do you mean, first block? Meaning first block in from the retail? How close is too close, kwim?

Re: Do you feel it's a plus to be walking distance to shopping/eateries, etc?

For me it doesn't matter.

My mom's house in KP was walking distance to the town area. She NEVER walked, always drove. When we were middle school aged we used to ride our bikes to town and it was so much fun, but in this day and age I wouldn't even let my kids to that!

I do love walking distance to parks & playgrounds. Our new house is walking dist. to Sweetbriar and this is awesome for Landon!!!

Yes, not to mention stores and restaurants help keep your taxes lower because they're paying some of them!

It's what I love most about where we live. We are around the corner from the library and one block from a small town main street where there are restaurants, bars, nail and hair salons, etc. We even walk to the outside farmers market on a Saturday morning.

Re: Do you feel it's a plus to be walking distance to shopping/eateries, etc?

Oh yea after living in another part of the town with ZERO areas to walk and nowhere near a train station we were so HAPPY to find a house near it all. We are about a 5 min walk to a park, 4 min walk to the train, 10 min walk into the main village, and completely walking distance to the elementary, jr high and senior high.

Now we have only walked into town about 10-15 times but my friend and I walk to the track at least once to twice a week to walk around that or we walk through town to the water.

ITA with this!! DH and I both walk to and from the train every day. We also have a son and we still walk with him to do errands whenever we can. We only drive if we are going big food shopping, buying something big, or going somewhere that is further away. We also moved from the city so we are used to and really enjoy walking.

I don't want them within walking distance. parks only.

too much traffic and noise that COULD be an issue one day. even if its not a busy shopping center, one day it could be. or it could be run down and bring in all walks of life, which I wouldn't want near me either

I lived in the city or a long time so I was used to walking to get to shops.
Now I'm in GN and I walk all the time.
I barely do a big food shop generally I get what I need for the day on my way home.

We also have 1 car which we barely use so walking is such a plus for me.

Yes! I love that we can walk to our favorite pizza place, the grocery store etc. It's a big plus for us. In fact, we were deciding between our location and a different area and one of the "cons" we listed for the other area was that we couldn't walk anywhere.

Constantly I think to myself, "I wish I could take the dogs with me" when I walk down the street to the store. The only place I take them with me walking is to Dairy Barn. Chat Icon

I truly enjoy it too. I bought a nice bicycle thinking I would use it for those errands but I actually enjoy the walk more.

I'm sorry, I said the first block thinking of and area on 1st Avenue in St. James. If you look it up, there are commerical properties on one side of the street and residential on the other. So the houses look out onto parking lots and such for Lake Avenue businesses.

The parking situation, garbage, people letting their dogs poop wherever, noise, traffic, and some of the more unsightly businesses are what would prevent me from buying on that block.

People tend to use those streets as a cut-through sometimes to avoid traffic. I know I did it when I lived in Long Beach.

Re: Do you feel it's a plus to be walking distance to shopping/eateries, etc?

Our old house was walking distance to a deli, butcher, small market, pizzeria and a few restaurants. I really liked it! When selling our house, some people liked that proximity, others specifically said they didn't.

The one annoying thing about certain areas is having people park on your street excessively. We're temporarily living at my mom's house which is very close to a popular downtown area and people are always parked on our street.

Re: Do you feel it's a plus to be walking distance to shopping/eateries, etc?

I think so. Where our house is I can easily walk to the post office, CVS, pizzeria, 7-11, nail salon ect.. which came in handy after DS was born. I was able to walk up the cvs to get things we needed or grab a salad at the pizzeria. We also have mots of other plaecs close by like tjmax, grocery stores, kohls, BBB, gap and lots more(you could walk, but it would take longer and I wouldnt want to walk back with bags - but it could be done)

I love that we have so much so close by. I have done several errands in such a short period of time because everything is here

If you're talking about a "main street" type of feel, then yes.
If it was a busy main road like 25, then no.

I miss living in Queens when I could just walk out the door and go to restaurants and stuff. Sometimes I want to move back just because of that.
