Do you give your infant water?
DD is 14 weeks old, my mom has been asking why I don't give her a little water everyday.
I told her that BM/Formula already has water in it, I don't think she needs additional fluid?
I asked my gf who has 2 DSs, she said her mother tells her the same thing, give her DSs water....
The one time when DD was constipated, the ped told me to give her 1/2 oz water, not more than that so it doesn't fill up her stomach and make her full.
so I don't know, give water or not

I have heard different things about this too, some say yes (like my mom) give the baby water, some say it can cause the baby real problems. I don't know what to do either.

I did... my ped is REAL old school (just like our parents) and said to give him 1/2oz water/day...
(DS was BF the 1st 2 months and FF until 11 months)
He didnt drink the entire 1/2 oz everyday, but it def. helped keep his bowel movements regular and took care of the hiccups...

I give DS warm water when he has the hiccups. My mom did it with me, and her mom with her, etc. I've heard conflicting views, so I don't know if I'm right or wrong.
I also gave him some cold water on those really hot days.

An infant doesn't need water unless they are constipated. Plus it makes them feel they are full

I also read somewhere - no idea where - but too much water can hurt their kidneys b/c they can't process it.
I didn't give any water except on the hot days until ds was drinking milk (1yr)
FYI - I don't even give him juice yet. The doc said if he's happy w/ milk and water he doens't need juice.

My pedi also said no water.....they can get "water poisoning" and it damages their kidneys and makes the unable to absorb vitamin D (i think it is)

We have Chelsea water between bottles because she was very constipated. She never had any issues with it and now at 16 months loves to drink water.

This is one of those issues that has changed dramatically since we were kids. My mom never understood the no water thing since it was commonplace back then.
We started giving DD water at 6 months in a sippy cup.

Water can be dangerous for infants. We did not start water until 9 months and even then she barely drank it.

sometimes I put a little water in ds's sippy cup but he does not get plain water on a regular basis.

my dr says to give water when he is out doors a lot to prevent dehydration.
I also give it to him when it is not yet time for his next feeding to see if that will 'tie' him over.

i wouldnt that young unless my ped told me too. My friend had to give her DD some water to help with the colic, or something like that, but i dont remember how old she was.

No I do not but my mom said the same thing. She said they did it because it would "fill them up." I don't really understand the reasoning, why would you wan to fill your baby up on something with no nutrition?
I did let DD lick an ice cube yesterday.

My ped was the same way and honestly, now that my DD is 8 she loves water. It definitly helped when she was about 1 1/2 that she had the stomach flu and couldnt have milk and they didnt want juice but the dr at the hospital tried to give her a bottle with water with sugar in it to hydrate her. I asked why the sugar. The doc said because most kids dont like water, its more for taste. So after i said she's been drinking water since about 2-3 months old the doc was like don't use the sugar then. It definitly helped us not to have to put the iv in her.

Generally it;s not needed. My ped told me that, repeatedly. So I did not do it unless instructed for constipation, by the ped.
